Job Summary
Radar Cross Section (RCS) Engineer – Trials, based at Thales Underwood Quarry, Wells. The role supplies RCS measurement services to the UK Ministry of Defence and industry partners, conducting indoor and outdoor measurements to characterise a range of customer‑supplied assets and platforms.
Overview
The team focuses on low observable radar signatures and their measurement methods. You will develop expertise under the guidance of the RCS Engineering Lead while performing core measurement, data processing and reporting tasks.
Primary Responsibilities
* Evaluate measurement targets and their associated requirements.
* Assess differing measurement methodologies and recommend solutions.
* Perform measurements, process data and interpret results.
* Communicate and report outputs to customers.
Key Development Responsibilities
* Prepare measurement test plans.
* Evaluate measurement targets and related requirements.
* Assess measurement methodologies and recommend solutions.
* Process measurement data to meet client specifications.
* Analyse and interpret radar signature data.
* Report outputs to customers.
* Investigate and identify target/range anomalous returns as part of the RSM team.
* Liaise with customers to clarify requirements and optimise measurement set‑ups.
Supporting Role
* Assist the Mechanical Engineer with target preparation.
* Assist in designing and manufacturing the target support structure.
* Support the RCS Trials Team Leader in bid preparation.
* Support the Radar Engineer with instrumentation configuration.
* Support the Radar Engineer in operating the instrumentation radar.
* Support the Service Delivery Manager for safe site operation.
* Provide general support activities.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience
* Hold or able to achieve security clearance to Developed Vetting (DV) status.
* Hold or able to achieve Working at Height accreditation.
* Hold or able to achieve IPAF accreditation.
* Hold or able to achieve Forklift accreditation.
* Hold or able to achieve Overhead Crane and Slinging accreditation.
* Qualified to degree level (or equivalent experience) in Physics or Electrical/Electronic Engineering, preferably with a focus on Electromagnetic theory.
* Desirable to learn MATLAB; desirable proficiency in Python or Delphi.
* Technical competence in planning and executing measurement trials.
* Effective stakeholder management and communication skills.
Security Clearance Requirement
Position requires a Sole British National with SC Security Clearance, achievable prior to commencement. Minimum 5 years UK residence usually required, with some flexibility for shorter residence periods.
