About Network Rail

At Network Rail we’re part of a large family serving millions of passengers and freight users throughout the UK every day. Our service impacts millions of people and we strive to become more efficient as we enhance, maintain and operate our network. At this time, we invite you to join our team in Wales and the Western region as we finalise reforms to our maintenance organisation which will deliver:

* A safer, more reliable and punctual service for passengers and employees – quicker fault fixes by more agile multi‑disciplined response teams.
* Individual rostering – enabling us to send the right number of people to fix a fault.
* Multi‑skilling – investing in the knowledge and skills of our people so they are better equipped to fix the most common faults themselves.
* Accelerated and improved technology deployment – we have a raft of labour and life‑saving technology ready to be rolled out.

Par, GB

MW SM(S), Par, Direct (892512) G5

Brief Description

You will help keep our nation moving every day. This is an essential part of the work we do in maintaining the railway network on a day‑to‑day basis.

From establishing safety arrangements to checking the quality of work, you will guide and inspire the success of a team involved in everything from inspections and troubleshooting, to maintenance and renewal.

Please Note: There may be a requirement to work on call in this role if you opt to take the standard maintenance contract.

About The Role (External)

From inspecting and fault‑finding to maintenance and refurbishment work, you will play a hands‑on role. You will ensure that everything is done efficiently and to the highest standards. Safety will be a priority. You will establish appropriate safety arrangements and ensure that both Network Rail staff and contractors follow safe working systems. By proactively managing and checking the quality of work and the competence of your people, you will see that assets fully comply and that all vehicles, machinery, tools, equipment and materials are fit for purpose. Along the way, you will produce a range of essential reports.

Signals and Telecommunications – You will work with equipment including signals that control when trains can run, level crossings, and point systems. With your willingness to learn, you will develop a wide range of technical skills across a variety of handheld, electrical, and digital equipment.

You are important to your team.

The team depends on you.

We would expect you to direct, organise, and motivate a high‑performing team. Your skills are important.

Essential Criteria

* Experience in organising and managing the safe and efficient delivery of work
* Excellent communication skills, both in person and in writing
* Knowledge of maintenance, inspection, fault‑finding, and discipline‑specific refurbishment techniques
* Knowledge of relevant standards, procedures, and instructions
* A clear and inspiring leader with a strong sense of direction

Desirable Criteria

* Possess or be working towards NVQ Level 2 or 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, or have reached the appropriate level of knowledge gained through relevant comparable experience
* Ability and willingness to drive vehicles as required

It is important that this is the right role for you.

Additional Information

* Shifts – Operational roles include a rotating shift pattern including days, nights, and weekends
* Working outdoors – Our workers work outdoors in all weather, so you should be comfortable working in different conditions
* Working safely – job offers are subject to drug and alcohol tests, passing the relevant medical assessment, and BPSS pre‑employment checks. This will include hearing and vision tests
* Driving – As a team leader, you will also need a driving licence (category B) in order to drive Network Rail vehicles
* Commuting times – You will also need to be within 60 minutes of the location you are applying for

This role involves working during the day, at night, and on weekends, and is a critical safety role, so it is subject to drug and alcohol tests and passing the relevant medical assessment.

You are important to us.

Your commitment to self‑development and continuous learning is highly important in this role, and we will provide all the training you need to develop technical skills and expertise.

Non‑technical leadership – If you join us from another industry, the structured training will give you the skills and confidence to move into a rewarding career in railways. Today’s workers are tomorrow’s technicians and team leaders, and we offer a clear career path for you.

Network Rail Benefits

* Privileged staff travel – 75% discount on all leisure travel and it includes family members
