We are looking for a strategic thinker who sees the bigger picture and is passionate about tackling crime in the waste sector. This Environment Agency priority attracts a great deal of attention and scrutiny from the government, media and waste industry. The Waste Crime team has a varied portfolio to secure funding, shape strategy, embed strategy, develop metrics, and influence policy and external engagement to deter waste crime.
You will join the Waste Crime team, a small but high performing group within Waste and Resources Regulation, part of the EA’s Environment and Business Directorate. Our purpose is to provide strategic direction and shape our organisation's approach to reducing crime in the waste sector using evidence, expertise, and innovation to influence policy, legislation, and resource allocation.
Responsibilities
* Secure sustainable funding.
* Shape strategy to guide the organisation.
* Provide support and expertise to effectively embed strategy.
* Develop metrics and use data-driven insights to assess the scale of waste crime and the effectiveness of interventions.
* Advise and influence Defra to ensure effective powers and legislation to stop offending.
* Provide leadership on strategic communications and external engagement to deter waste crime.
* Deliver accurate and accessible information to inform, engage, and foster understanding across diverse audiences.
In this role you will initially:
* Take a lead role in reviewing the Strategy to Reduce Offending in the Waste Sector.
* Engage extensively internally and externally and collaborate with key stakeholders including Defra, industry and operational teams to shape strategy.
* Utilise data to ensure that the strategy is grounded in evidence.
* Develop control plans to translate strategy into meaningful action across the organisation.
We require a dynamic leader who challenges the status quo, drives innovation and continuous improvement, and works collaboratively with a wide range of people. We seek a team player who is flexible and can turn their attention to a range of work areas and priorities within the Waste Crime Team and the wider Waste and Resources Regulation department.
Experience / Skills Required

* Enthusiastic, well-organised, and tenacious to keep work moving at pace.

* Track record of achieving results and experience of planning, managing, and delivering to tight deadlines.
* Ability to re-evaluate how we work to enable effective and efficient delivery.
* Previous experience in a regulation and/or enforcement.
* Broad understanding of the waste industry.
* Aware of the strategic landscape challenges in tackling crime in the waste sector.
You’ll have a range of development opportunities and appropriate training will be provided.
Location & Status
You’ll have an EA Office base location; as a national role the working location is flexible / hybrid. Some travel and overnights may be required.
