This post is a substantive 0.8 WTE post. We would invite candidates from all medical, general practice, surgical, anaesthetic and intensive care backgrounds as we believe that all experience is valuable to Specialist Palliative Care. Previous Specialty Doctors in the department have gone on to higher training in Specialist Palliative Care, have been supported through Portfolio pathway (CESR) applications or have continued to thrive as well valued -Speciality Doctors within the department.
It is proposed that this post, will further foster the development of multidisciplinary team working across the Health Board. The post is within the hospital palliative care team in Swansea Bay which includes Morriston and Singleton hospitals. The role is a liaison role, with the team working alongside health and social care professionals across all care settings It is envisioned that the post holder would be flexible to work in either site as clinical need arises and as part of cross-cover arrangements. However where possible the post holder will spend blocks of time in each setting. There may be scope to change the base for the post in future. The job timetable includes on call work which is expected for this post.
Main duties of the job
As a Specialty Doctor in Palliative Medicine, your core responsibility is to provide high‑quality specialist palliative care across SBUB, working as an integral part of a consultant‑led, multidisciplinary team. You will contribute to the assessment, management and ongoing review of patients with complex palliative care needs across hospital, community and specialist inpatient settings such as Tŷ Olwen and Y Rhosyn. Under consultant supervision, you will support the prevention, diagnosis and management of illness, ensuring excellent symptom control, compassionate care, and continuity for patients and their families.
You will undertake inpatient reviews, participate in MDT meetings, respond to referrals, offer telephone advice, and contribute to advanced care planning. You will also take part in a non-resident on‑call rota, providing out‑of‑hours support for both hospital and community teams and acting as first on call for Tŷ Olwen.
You will take an active role in teaching medical students, junior doctors and health professionals, and participate in departmental educational meetings and the wider academic programme. Opportunities exist to pursue research, postgraduate development and involvement in the work of the All Wales Palliative Medicine group, supported by the Health Board’s strong university partnerships.

We are a University Health Board working in partnership with Swansea University, Swansea School of Medicine, the School of Health Science and the Institute of Life Science. Swansea is Wales' second largest city and sits on the five-mile sweep of Swansea Bay. An ideal base for exploring South-West Wales, there is also much on offer for visitors in Swansea itself. Swansea has a range of shops, cosy cafes, great restaurants, art galleries as well as being able to offer good outdoor lifestyle with its beautiful coastline and beaches on the Gower Peninsula. Swansea also has excellent sporting facilities including the Wales National pool and Swansea.com stadium home to the Ospreys and Swansea City Football Club.

1. Full GMC Registration with a license to practice
2. Primary qualification MBBS / MBChB or equivalent medical degree
3. Certification or instructor status in ATLS
4. shall have completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
