Overview of Sydney Missionary and Bible College

Sydney Missionary and Bible College’s (SMBC) vision is to see thousands of loving, skilled graduates bringing the light of Christ to a dark and needy world. For over one hundred years, it aims to achieve its vision by creating learning communities through which God prepares his people – theologically, spiritually, and practically – to serve Jesus in diverse contexts and cultures.

Located in Sydney's cosmopolitan Inner West, SMBC is a college of the Australian University of Theology, offering a variety of courses at undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate level. SMBC provides a flexible approach to learning, offering full-time and part-time, day and evening, intensive and semester-length options, to meet the needs of Christians from a variety of backgrounds and with a range of ministry goals.


Position Profile: Lecturer in Christian Thought

Faculty in the Christian Thought department deliver units in:

* Systematic Theology
* Christianity in History
* Ethics

The primary objective of this position is the effective preparation of men and women for local and intercultural vocational and non-vocational ministries.

In order to meet this objective, the person we are seeking will:

* Be an enthusiastic ambassador for the study of Christian Thought.
* Be a supportive and collaborative team player; and
* Have a strong and growing relationship with the Lord.

Ideally, they will also possess (or be close to possessing):

* A doctorate in a field of Christian Thought.
* Teaching and/or ministry experience.
* Research outputs in a field of Christian Thought.


Primary Responsibilities


Teaching and Learning

* Provide students with a high-quality learning experience, assisting them to achieve prescribed learning outcomes at undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate level.
* Engage in ongoing development of personal teaching methods and practices to apply high-quality, innovative learning techniques and use of materials that create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students.
* Participate in developing units of study and other course materials in line with Australian University of Theology requirements.
* Partner with colleagues to drive the development, planning and implementation of high quality, innovative curriculum.
* Prepare for and conduct face-to-face, online, and co-operative programs as allocated.
* Provide constructive feedback to students in a timely manner.
* Be available to meet with students for both academic and pastoral reasons.


Research and Scholarship

* Maintain an understanding of current research in the field(s) of expertise.
* Attend and present at relevant conferences and share knowledge and insights gained with the wider faculty.
* Carry out research and scholarship with tangible outputs.
* Be willing to participate in research projects or other collaborative research initiatives.
* Potentially supervise postgraduate and doctoral students.


Contribution to the devotional and general life of the College

* Provide effective pastoral care of students.
* Lead by example in the devotional life of the College, including participating in Community Events, and communal meals.
* Engage in core SMBC activities, including leading an annual College mission team.
* Participate in orientation, graduation, conferences, and other activities of the College as required.
* Represent and actively promote the College within the wider Christian community.
* Undertake other reasonable tasks, including participating in project work as directed by the Director of Teaching and Learning and/or the Principal.


Management and Administration

* In conjunction with the registrars, manage the progress of students through their course of study, including maintaining email records and other records of participation, coursework, and assessment.
* Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, information sessions and other relevant College events.
* Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders (including church and para-church organisations) in a professional and courteous manner to deliver outcomes.
* Participate in the development of the College in relation to marketing plan objectives.
* Undertake any relevant internal training courses as requested.
* Understand and comply with SMBC Codes of Conduct, Work Health & Safety, Safe Communities, Privacy and other College policies.
