Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and motivated individual, ideally with an in-depth understanding of service management in diagnostics and/or understanding of radiology services. We are looking for excellent leadership, organisational and team building skills, as well as experience of service performance management. Personal presentation skills, data analytical skills and the ability to influence both verbally and in written form will also be important as we seek to develop the service via funding initiatives and business cases.

The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a high level of IT literacy and operate collaboratively as a core member of the cross site Radiology senior management team. Attention to detail, the ability to work to tight deadlines in a challenging environment and managing multiple tasks is essential.

This is a cross-site role with responsibilities across teams at both KCH Denmark Hill and the PRUH and South Sites.


Main duties of the job

To provide timely, efficient and effective operational management for the main, neuro and dental radiology services.

To ensure that services are responsive, innovative and operate to the highest possible clinical and performance standards and to take full responsibility for actions and for keeping other team members fully informed at all times.

The post holder will manage a team of administrative and other staff as well as provide support to the Clinical Director, General Manager and Clinical Leads with the management of the medical workforce.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To promote and support the development of the Trust's strategy, vision, values, aims and objectives.

To lead for Main, Neuro and Dental Radiology in contributing to the production of the Division's strategic and business plans, as part of the annual planning cycle and on an ad‑hoc basis as required.

To monitor service delivery against strategic and business plans in identified specialities and areas throughout the year to ensure successful delivery.

Produce accurate, high quality business cases for service developments, taking into account activity, cost and income projections.

To develop intra‑departmental working and performance review across all Trust sites and delivery areas of care.

To play a major role in transforming the operational delivery of services within Main, Neuro and Dental Radiology in line with the strategic direction of the Trust and Care Group working with the Triumvirate, clinical teams and operational colleagues to embed improvements in efficiency at the same time as improving patient experience.


Person specification


Essential criteria

* Educated to degree level or equivalent level of experience of working at a senior level in the relevant area
* Relevant Masters, equivalent professional qualification or equivalent experience (e.g. MBA)
* Track record of continuous professional and management development.
* Evidence of leading successful project and / or operational performance and improvement including business case preparation.
* Significant service or general management experience in the NHS with responsibility for operational matters including, staff management, budgetary responsibility, performance targets, waiting list management, discharge arrangements.
* Experience of understanding complex financial reports, along with budget setting and management in healthcare, including multi‑strand range of income sources.
* Knowledge of effectively managing medical rotas and dealing with compliance issues - including previous medical staffing experience ideally from the NHS or similar medical provider.
* Proven experience and record of service development and quality improvement
* Understanding of HR processes and experience of staff management
* Extensive knowledge of operations and / or project management methodologies and techniques
* Use advanced analytical and judgement skills including understanding and application of complex statistical and numerical data.
* Ability to work independently to manage highly complex and difficult situations where there is conflict
* Excellent interpersonal, communication (written, oral, presentation, facilitation), networking and negotiation skills with a track record in consistently delivering performance targets and writing complex business cases, policies and change.
* IT literate, including competency in MS Office programmes and in particular in Excel.
* Ability to work with managers and staff in a busy and changing environment to recommend, negotiate and agree appropriate effective and pragmatic solutions to service needs
* Demonstrates behaviours in accordance with the King's values at all times.


Desirable criteria

* Prince 2 qualification or equivalent experience
* Evidence of service initiation / commissioning, contract negotiation, and the development and monitoring of output and outcome measures.
* Highly developed knowledge and understanding of the changing NHS environment, strategy, and policy agendas.
