Band 7 Senior Theatre Practitioner- Major Vascular/Interventional Lead

We are moving our Major/Interventional Vascular Services from the Bedford Hospital site to the Luton & Dunstable site over the next few months ready to move into a brand new Acute services Block from December.

Main duties of the job

Support the Senior Theatre Team in regards to staffing considerations, operational management, resource use (including supplies & equipment)), staff compliance to policies & procedures, teaching & induction of new staff/students, clinical practice and safety, risk, governance and quality initiatives. Lead, promote & uphold principles of the Hygiene Code, including putting safety principles in place for infection control, cleaning, risk assessment, allocation of responsibilities, following policies & procedures, maintaining standards, surveillance/monitoring & remedying deficiencies.

Both hospital sites offer key services such as A&E, Obstetrics-led Maternity and Paediatrics.

It is an exciting time at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital as maternity, neonatal, critical care and theatre services will be moving to the brand new Acute Services Block (ASB) and New Ward Block in October 2025. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Practice

1. To practice as an expert practitioner in own clinical area with a working knowledge of other clinical specialties.
2. Lead in the planning and implementation of care.
3. Monitor standards of practice, address deficiencies within team and role model high standards of care
4. Identifying and minimising risk, reporting, investigating and addressing identified risks.
5. Adhere to and role model dept and trust policies and guidelines.
6. To support systems of sharing good practice and learning from clinical incidents.

Management

7. To help facilitate team rosters with optimum skill mix to ensure cover of specialty.
8. resource management (supplies/equipment), staffing stays within budget.
9. Line management responsibilities- performance management, appraisals, sickness absence, allocations, training, interviewing, maintain standards.

Communication

10. To promote and participate in effective dialogue between patients/relatives and other members of the MDT within Dept/wider trust.
11. To care for a variety of patients where there are varying degrees of understanding and to treat patients/colleagues with dignity and respect.
12. To exercise judgement, planning and analysis as a means of participating in the decision within the Dept, Care Group and wider trust.
13. Ability to represent the interest of Theatres on the wider Acute Services Block workstream and to other Trust departments and provide expert Theatre opinion/perspective.

Education & Training

14. To maintain and extend knowledge base as an expert Theatre Practitioner
15. Support the learning environment in Theatres with the Practice Educator Team.

Person Specification

Qualifications

16. Ist level RGN or ODP with NMC/HCPC Registration
17. Educated to Diploma/Degree level
18. Practice Educator/Supervisor course with yearly updates.

Experience

19. Significant clinical experience at Band 6 or above
20. Expert level skills in Vascular/Interventional Scrub and experience in other specialties.

Communication

21. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills.
22. Training and teaching skills
23. Able to collaborate and work well in team environments.

24. RGN or ODP with NMC or HCPC Registration
25. Educated to Degree Level
26. Teaching qualification/course- ENB 998, MSPP, A1 or V1/Practice Supervisor or Assessor
27. Specialist Theatre Course

Desirable criteria

28. management qualification or relevant training/courses

Experience

Essential criteria

29. Currently working at least as a Band 6 or 7 in Scrub/Recovery or Anaesthetics
30. Significant clinical experience experience in either Scrub/recovery or Anaesthetics
31. Experience in an acute NHS trust or comparable experience
32. Being able to lead a team

Essential criteria

33. being able to lead and motivate Theatre colleagues
34. Specialist scrub, recovery or anaesthetic skills
35. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be able to work collaboratively with times both inside and outside of Theatres.

38. Ability to work under pressure, adaptable, flexible and can meet deadlines
39. Caring and compassionate
40. IT skills and knowledge of trust information systems

43. Problem solving and analytical skills
