Main duties of the job
The Practice Educator Facilitator within Skills for Practice plays a pivotal role in delivering clinical skills education, Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) induction, and workforce development across University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). This role underpins evidence-based practice and supports the development of safe, competent and confident practitioners across the organisation.
Working in close partnership with internal clinical teams, programme leads within Training, Development and Workforce, and external stakeholders including the Faculty of Medicine and wider healthcare partners, you will contribute to the delivery of the undergraduate medical curriculum and widening participation initiatives.
In this role, you will deliver high-quality teaching, supervision and ongoing clinical assessment to a broad range of learners, including Trust-wide registered and non-registered staff, medical students (BMEU, BMIT, BM4, BM5, BM6), FY1 doctors, Clinical Fellows, and HCSWs. You will support learners beyond the classroom by facilitating safe application of skills within clinical practice and maintaining a visible clinical profile to role model excellence in care delivery.
Through the delivery of theoretical, practical and simulation-based education including OSCE preparation and examination, you will ensure learners develop the confidence, competence and professionalism required for high-quality patient care. You will also undertake quality monitoring activities that support practice areas in meeting professional and regulatory standards for practice-based education, proactively identifying and addressing areas for improvement through audit, incident reporting and service evaluation.
Working collaboratively with clinical, academic, and workforce development colleagues, and reporting to the relevant Programme Lead within Training, Development and Workforce, you will enhance learner experience, strengthen clinical confidence, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the workforce at UHS. Your contribution will directly influence patient safety, staff development, professional standards and organisational excellence.

Deliver high-quality, evidence-based clinical teaching, simulation-based education and induction programmes to multi-professional learners across the Trust.
Provide ongoing supervision, assessment and support for learners in clinical practice, ensuring safe application of skills aligned with Trust and regulatory standards.
Support medical students across all academic programmes (BMEU, BM4, BM5, BM6), including OSCE revision delivery, OSCE set up and assessment.
Contribute to FY1 and Clinical Fellow induction, HCSW induction, and widening participation activities to promote inclusive access to healthcare careers.
Maintain clinical competence through continued engagement in clinical practice and role model excellence in patient care.
Build and promote positive relationships with stakeholders including clinical leads, subject specialists, practice educators, simulated patients, education centre teams and external partners.
Collaborate with clinical and non-clinical teams to support the development of students, preceptors, trainees and members of the wider multi-professional workforce.
Undertake quality monitoring activities to ensure practice areas maintain professional and regulatory body standards for practice-based education.
Contribute to quality improvement processes by identifying and acting appropriately regarding incidents of poor practice through clinical incident reporting, audit and research.
Work autonomously and proactively to positively influence the quality of the clinical learning environment.
Prepare effectively for teaching sessions, managing learning environments, digital resources and adapting delivery for varied group sizes and knowledge levels.
Demonstrate the ability to coordinate, monitor and prioritise workload effectively within a dynamic and responsive educational setting
What Experience And Skills Are Needed
Proven experience delivering clinical teaching, supervision and assessment within a healthcare setting.
Significant experience working within an acute healthcare environment.
Experience supporting multi-professional learners and adapting delivery to varied learning needs and professional backgrounds.
Strong communication skills, with confidence engaging staff at all organisational levels, including senior leadership and medical colleagues.
Confident digital skills, including use of classroom technology, simulation equipment and standard IT systems to support teaching and learning.
Competence in, or willingness to develop competence in, a broad range of clinical skills required for teaching, including catheterisation (male and female), cannulation, venepuncture, basic life support (if registered), intravenous medication administration (peripheral and central, if registered), intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, suturing, simulation-based teaching, nasogastric tube insertion, clinical observations, blood glucose monitoring, urinalysis, and other skills aligned with Trust-wide requirements or the medical student curriculum.
Ability to manage competing priorities and respond effectively to the dynamic and sometimes unpredictable nature of education delivery.
Commitment to maintaining clinical competence and modelling professional excellence.
Additional Information
This is a 30-hour post, working 4 days per week, 08:30–16:30, Monday to Friday.
No routine weekend or unsocial hours are required. However, flexibility is essential during OSCE periods and widening participation events.
The postholder may be required to travel between sites where necessary.

Essential criteria
Registered professional OR relevant equivalent experience relating to clinical fields working at Band 4 or above
Evidence of continuing educational development at degree level or relevant equivalent experience
Some experience of clinical teaching within the health care setting
Proven employment history and experience in clinical setting
Competent in clinical skills
