Overview
Would you like to work for a large, operational and delivery-focused Directorate at the forefront of key Scottish Government priorities? Play a pivotal role in delivering and managing complex Robotic Process Automation (RPA) & automated solutions, supporting initiatives across Scottish Government and the wider public sector.
The newly formed Automation Team has a vacancy for a Lead Automation Developer to manage agile projects within a portfolio and support team members in developing AI-powered automated solutions.
Corporate Transformation is a new Directorate aimed at increasing the Scottish Government’s capacity to deliver transformational change, impacting the wider public sector. It provides structure and governance to prioritize and deliver key projects and programmes.
As Lead Automation Developer, you will collaborate with senior stakeholders and end users throughout the project lifecycle—from identifying automation opportunities to designing, developing, testing, and maintaining automations. You will employ process optimization techniques and agile methodologies, oversee defect resolution, manage change requests, and monitor deployed applications.
You will ensure quality assurance across technical platforms, contribute to Service Design of the Automation Centre of Excellence (CoE), and coach the development team to adhere to best practices, ensuring automations meet business needs and are scalable. You will evaluate the automation framework's effectiveness and develop contingencies for technology integration.
This role involves defining working methods, training staff, and promoting standards within the team. You will review design and development work, select appropriate technologies, and utilize resources efficiently.

DDaT Pay Supplement
This position attracts a £5,000 per annum pro-rata DDaT Pay Supplement after a 3-month competency period. Pay supplements are temporary, addressing recruitment and retention issues, and are subject to review.
Responsibilities
* Lead the team in identifying automation opportunities using process optimization and agile methodologies, ensuring quality and risk management.
* Apply strategic thinking to automation, seeking process commonality and leading decision-making on automated solutions.
* Oversee design, build, testing, and deployment of automation solutions, collaborating with stakeholders throughout.
* Manage obstacles, improve system robustness, resilience, and stability.
* Define control mechanisms for issue investigation and change management in production.
* Work with technical architects and management to develop long-term strategies and ensure quality assurance.
* Engage stakeholders and promote continuous improvement.
* Establish and coach best practice standards for automation within the Scottish Public Sector CoE.
