Senior Statistician – Modernising Medical Microbiology Unit
NDM Experimental Medicine, John Radcliffe Hospital & Big Data Institute, Oxford
About the role
We are looking for a creative and driven Senior Statistician to join the Modernising Medical Microbiology (MMM) Unit at the University of Oxford. This is a unique opportunity to lead high-impact research in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment spanning medical statistics, epidemiology, clinical microbiology, and data science.
You’ll work with large-scale electronic health records and pathogen sequencing data to design, conduct, and publish innovative statistical analyses, helping improve infection diagnosis, management, and surveillance. Based between the Big Data Institute and the John Radcliffe Hospital, you’ll be part of a 40-strong team working closely with the NHS, UK Health Security Agency, and other partners to ensure findings are translated into real-world benefit.
The role includes leading statistical work for two major NIHR-funded initiatives: the Oxford BRC “Big Infection Diagnostics” programme and the Health Protection Research Unit on Antimicrobial Resistance. You will also supervise PhD students, support junior statisticians, and help shape the future direction of the Unit’s research.
If you’re passionate about using statistics to tackle real-world health challenges, and keen to work in a supportive, forward-thinking environment, we’d love to hear from you.
This post is full-time and fixed term until 31/03/2028. Part-time working will be considered (minimum 0.8 FTE, 30 hours per week minimum).
About you
You’ll have a PhD (or equivalent experience) in a numerically focused field and a strong background in epidemiological and statistical methods. You’ll bring a track record of publishing impactful statistical research using large health datasets, and ideally experience securing research funding. You’re confident using R (or similar), thrive when working independently and collaboratively, and have excellent communication and organisational skills. You enjoy mentoring others and have experience supervising PhD students. A keen interest in infection-related research is essential, and experience working with electronic health records, microbiology, or machine learning would be very welcome.
Applications from candidates who do not fulfil the essential criteria will be considered for appointment at Grade 8 with a salary range of £48,235- £57,255 per annum with amended duties and responsibilities.
Benefits of working
University employees enjoy 38 days’ paid holiday, generous pension schemes, travel discounts, and a variety of professional development opportunities. Our range of other employee benefits and discounts also includes free entry to the Botanic Gardens and University colleges, and discounts at University museums.
