Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy
This full-time position is available from 1 May 2024 on a fixed-term basis until 31 October 2024.
Summary of the role
The Faculty seeks to recruit a Graduate Research Assistant to participate in the NERC-funded consortium project PAMANA: Philippine Mining at the National to Catchment Scale – from Legacy Impacts to Sustainable Futures. The position supports Professor Karen Hudson-Edwards and is available from 1 May 2024 to 31 October 2024.
The aim of PAMANA is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the environmental and ecological impacts of mining on Philippine river systems and to develop sustainable monitoring and management practices. This role offers the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary, international team that will influence sustainable mining practices and environmental monitoring in the Philippines. The researcher will primarily contribute to two work packages: the environmental impacts of contaminated sediments and the risks and potential of mine tailings dams.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Leading the organization, preparation, and analysis of geochemical and mineralogical samples from Philippine river catchments, including statistical and spatial data analysis.
2. Documenting research outputs, maintaining records and databases, and drafting technical reports and publications.
3. Staying updated with advances in the field.
4. Participating in consortium workshops and interdisciplinary activities.
5. Publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals.
The project benefits from facilities at the Camborne School of Mines and the Environment & Sustainability Institute (ESI) at the University of Exeter, offering access to world-class resources and collaborative opportunities with international teams.
