The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a large teaching trust providing a wide range of clinical services, medical education, training and research. The four hospitals are John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton Hospital in Banbury.
Main duties of the job
Principal Activities:
Clinical
 * The post-holder’s duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe in Oxford and the Horton Hospital in Banbury, and willing to work at other Trust locations.
 * Possibility of Saturday clinics in the future with time off in lieu.
 * Clinics: ~4 hours per session (new patients 30 minutes, follow-ups 15 minutes).
 * Endoscopy lists: ~12 units per list, including upper GI endoscopy (1 unit diagnostic, 2 units therapeutic) and colonoscopy (2 units diagnostic including simple polypectomy, 3 units therapeutic).
 * Administrative support provided; IT supported by Trust IT; mentorship for new Consultants.
Teaching/Research
 * Participation in teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and clinical examinations.
 * Teaching, training and research to be included in regular job plan review.

GRADE: Consultant
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Clinical Director of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES:
Clinical
The post-holder’s duties will be primarily at John Radcliffe in Oxford and Horton Hospital in Banbury, and will be willing to work in any Trust location. Saturday lists may be required in the future with time off in lieu. Clinics: 4 hours with 30-minute new patient and 15-minute follow-up slots. Endoscopy: 12 units per list with a mix of upper GI and colonoscopy, including simple polypectomy.
The department has secretarial/administrative support; office space, computer access; IT support; mentorship for new Consultants.
Teaching/Research
Teaching, training and research will be part of the role and integral to everyday activity; contributions to teaching and research will be reviewed in the job plan.
Clinical Governance
Participation in clinical governance activities, including audits, risk management and quality improvement as required by the Trust and external bodies.
Personal and Professional Development
Maintain up-to-date practice; study leave may be granted per Trust terms; training and CME supported as appropriate.
Appraisal and Revalidation
Participation in appraisal and revalidation.
Management
Work within Trust policies; undertake administrative duties; contribute to running of the clinical department under leadership; manage risk in a transparent environment.
Staff should be familiar with local response and their role within it.

Person specification
Qualifications/Training
 * Full GMC Registration
 * MRCP or equivalent
 * CCT in Gastroenterology or GMC Specialist Register in Gastroenterology (or within six months of interview); extensive Gastrointestinal endoscopy experience; JAG accreditation (or equivalent) in Upper GI endoscopy
 * JAG accreditation for colonoscopy
 * BCSP accreditation
 * PhD or equivalent
Experience
 * Gastroenterology training to specialist level; extensive endoscopy experience; advanced endoscopy
 * Consultant or senior trainee level
 * Advanced/complex therapeutic endoscopy; training/experience in intestinal ultrasound
Skills and Knowledge
 * Leadership, organization, communication and professional skills for a senior role in a large Teaching Hospital
 * Excellent interpersonal skills; strong English communication; computing skills
 * Experience in teaching undergraduates and trainees
 * Contributions to clinical governance, risk management and audits
 * Ability to conduct independent research and attract funding
 * Advanced communication training; management experience
