Training course: Machining Technician (Level 3)
Hours: Monday to Thursday 8:00am – 5:00pm and Friday 8:00am – 2:00pm, with a 30‑minute lunch break each day.

What you’ll do at work
- Understand and adhere to health and safety protocols on site
- Learn to safely operate, set and program CNC lathes and mills (3‑ and 4‑axis)
- Create 3D models on CAD software and program CNC machines using CAM software
- Operate and use manual machines safely
- Create work instructions for the manufacturing process
- Liaise with cutting tool representatives for continuous improvement
- Ensure components meet drawing dimensions using metrology equipment
- Carry out additional duties as requested by mentor or management team
- Plan and organise own work and resources
- Apply inspection, quality assurance procedures and processes
- Select machining processes, tooling and work-holding devices
- Set and adjust machine operating parameters (feeds, speeds, etc.)
- Apply machining operations and techniques to produce complex components (e.g., parallel, stepped, angular diameters, grooves, slots, recesses, undercuts, radii, chamfers, internal and external forms, threads)
- Measure and check components
- Identify and rectify issues in the manufacturing process, including fault-finding and diagnostic testing
- Maintain the work area and manage consumables
- Communicate verbally with colleagues and stakeholders
- Apply continuous improvement techniques and ethical principles

- Comply with statutory health and safety regulations and procedures.

- Monitor, obtain and check stock and supplies, and complete stock returns.
- Record information (paper or electronic) for energy usage, job sheets, risk assessments, equipment service records, test results, handover documents, asset management and legal reporting.

Qualifications
- EAL Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (Development Competence)
- City and Guilds Machining Technician
- Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Machining) (Development Technical Knowledge)
- Four‑year apprenticeship with weekly college attendance at Colchester Institute’s Braintree Campus (transport provided)
Requirements
GCSE in maths and English (grade A*-C/9-4)
