Overview

Job purpose: To escort and assist clients with special needs, board and alight vehicles in their daily journey to and from home, school, centre or other destinations as directed.


Responsibilities

* Ensure safety and wellbeing of clients throughout the journey and handover.
* Ensure that the client gains safe entry to either the vehicle or their destination.
* Ensure safety and wellbeing of transport users throughout the journey and handover from and to: residence/guardian/care assistant; primary helper at school; or to care assistants at centres. Assist passengers to board and alight vehicles using appropriate means, including physically assisting passengers with severe disabilities.
* Maintain appropriate communication with the Controller regarding reporting of problems related to transport of a client (e.g., disruptive behaviour, absenteeism, lateness).
* Apply health and safety standards to ensure the welfare of clients, including physical assistance for boarding/alighting, securing seats with safety restraints, and ensuring wheelchairs are correctly secured to retaining mechanisms or securing points within the vehicle.
* Be responsible along with the driver for keeping the interior and exterior of the vehicle clean and tidy to required standards, including hygiene control. Wear necessary personal protective equipment and uniform as required.
* Participate in working flexible hours with core hours between 07:00–09:00 and 14:30–16:30. Undertake additional work as the service needs dictate. Report incidents or problems to the Controller as required.
* Work in a predominantly outdoor environment on vehicles transporting clients to various locations, and operate in a safe and efficient manner in all weather, traffic, and road conditions.
* Must not have physical or mental limitations that could interfere with safe passage of clients, passenger assistance, and emergency activities.
* Daily functions include operating and using appropriate techniques and equipment (e.g., tail lifts, sitting restraints) as part of the routine.
* Conduct health and safety/manual handling activities (pushing, lifting, carrying, and supporting clients), including transfers via stairs where reasonable and appropriate.
* Provide dressing and emergency toileting assistance for identified clients when required.
* Variations of duties depend on the needs of service users/clients, such as mobility issues, learning difficulties, mental health problems, elderly or disabled individuals, and types of transport (fleet vehicles, including those adapted for disabled access).
* Numbers and ages of service users/clients will vary.


Work environment and supervision

The work may involve a substantial risk to personal safety from day-to-day activities. The jobholder generally works within established guidelines and procedures, but may occasionally use initiative to solve basic problems related to escorting of clients. For more complex issues, consult the Controller or other appropriate HATS supervisor. The role involves contact with Parents, guardians, carers, attendants, teachers, centre organisers, council staff and other HATS employees in a multi-ethnic environment.

* Clients of Transport Services
* Staff of centres or schools
* Parents/guardians or primary helper

Rehabilitation of Offenders Act: The jobholder is exempt from the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and is required to disclose offences accordingly. The jobholder may be required to use mobile communications, tracking equipment, radio, telephone, messaging, and GPS, and is accountable only for the use of equipment/resources associated with normal daily activities.
