Consultant Psychiatrist – Specialist Community Forensic Team

We are inviting applications from Consultants in Forensic Psychiatry or General Adult Psychiatry with an interest in forensic psychiatry/assertive outreach psychiatry. Forensic psychiatry experience is not essential, particularly if the applicant has experience of working in community settings with complex patients or has experience of Forensic Psychiatry as a Trainee or SAS doctor.
This is a 9 PA Consultant Psychiatrist post, created following an internal service re‑organisation. The post holder will work as part of the Specialised Community Forensic Team (SCFT) multidisciplinary team, in close collaboration with the local Low Secure Unit Consultant colleagues and inpatient MDT. There is the possibility to agree a 10 PA job‑plan on appointment, incorporating an additional Trust‑wide responsibility.
This role can be linked with the Consultant Psychiatrist – Psychiatric Intensive Care and ECT Service; if you would like to be considered for both roles please state this on your application – there is no need to apply for both roles.
Job responsibilities
The post holder will act as a Responsible Clinician for patients discharged from secure settings under active Tier 4 care coordination, overseeing assessment and diagnosis, management plans including pharmacological and psychological interventions, MHT and Manager’s Hearings, outpatient reviews, CPAs, ASRs, and liaison with agencies such as the MoJ, MAPPA, Police, FIND, FPDS, accommodation providers, etc.
Provide clinical leadership to the SCFT, input into care, treatment and risk management, and direct involvement in assessment and transition of patients from secure settings back into community, from NHS and private providers.
Screen referrals to Gloucestershire secure directorate, collaborate with inpatient consultants for access assessment stages, receive training via SWPC (DUNDRUM).
Consult and support local community teams, PICU and open wards for specialist guidance for all patients accepted onto Tier 1, 2 and 3.
Collaborate with inpatient teams caring for Gloucestershire patients in secure settings, develop a wider leadership role within the South West Provider Collaborative, represent the Trust in forensic relevant multi‑agency forums such as MAPPA, maintain up‑to‑date medical records and reports, and participate in on‑call rota (1 in 20, 0.5 PA payment).
Person specification
Qualifications
* On GMC Specialist Register, or eligible for such inclusion at time of interview. Advanced Trainees within 6 months of their CCT date at interview. Approved Clinician/S12 approval or eligibility for approval.
Experience
* Experience of working at consultant or Advanced Trainee/SpR level on a Forensic Team, or experience in Assertive Outreach/Crisis.
* Excellent knowledge and clinical skills using a bio‑psycho‑social perspective. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty; make decisions based on evidence and experience including contributions of others; meet responsibilities under MHA and MCA.

£109,725 to £145,478 a year pro rata.
