Summary

We’re looking for someone with a love of history and an eye for detail, who’s friendly and open with people. This role is about looking after a historic house and its collections of precious objects, furniture and works of art. It’s about presenting all of this to people visiting, and helping to make every person’s day memorable and enjoyable.

Salary: £16,536 pro rata (£25,837.50 FTE)

Hours: 1248 hours per year. This role is based on annualised hours, where the amount of hours you work each month may vary, however your salary will be paid in 12 equal instalments over the year.

Contract Duration: Permanent

Working Pattern: You will work 1 in 3 weekends as part of a rota, as well as some public holidays. Typically, you will work 24 hours per week, but some flexibility will be required to help cover annual leave, and occasional evening work for events will be required.

Interview Date: Thursday 7th May

For this role, you’ll need to complete our online assessment instead of using a C.V. or online application form. This will help us understand more about your strengths and give you more information on the role.

What it's like to work here

Reporting to the Collections & House Manager, you will work as part of a small group of deeply committed conservation staff, as well as a large and very active volunteer cohort. You will deliver great standards of presentation, conservation cleaning and collections care. As part of a rota, you’ll lead the daily volunteer briefings and be their key contact whilst they are onsite. This picturesque property is just four miles outside of Dorking, however you're likely to need your own transport to get here.

What you'll be doing

As a Collections Assistant, you’ll be working with a great housekeeping team in an incredible place, helping with the day-to-day operations, cleaning and care of the collections and house. No detail will go unnoticed, and you’ll keep a keen eye on everything from the environmental conditions in a room, to signs of wear and tear. You’ll also keep accurate records.

In this visitor facing role, we’d love you to talk to visitors about the work you’re doing, and the collections we have. You'll help to manage the house volunteers, creating a warm and welcoming environment for them. You'll also be part of the wider team of employees and volunteers, helping to cover where necessary.

You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what’s possible in this role.

Who we're looking for

We’d love to hear from you if you're:

1. good hand-to-eye skills, and happy to work from ladders or scaffold towers
2. comfortable working in a flexible and adaptable way
3. focused on giving great service to everyone you meet
4. a team player, but also happy to work on your own initiative
5. well-organised and versatile
6. willing to learn new skills.
