English at Birmingham City University is placed 13th in the Times University Rankings 2026 League Table, and the University received Gold for Student Experience in the last Teaching Excellence Framework. In REF 2021 the Unit of Assessment performed very well and the department is strongly research active.

Applications are invited for the post of Fixed Term Lecturer in English Literature (0.5 FTE for 1 year) starting in January. The successful applicant will teach on our existing BA English courses and modules. They will lead the Shakespeare module and lead or contribute to teaching on first year survey modules, optional modules, and undertake dissertation supervision. While not essential, experience teaching Creative Writing (prose) at undergraduate level would be welcomed. You will have a track record of publications, which will contribute to the work of the literature research cluster in the department.


Duties and responsibilities


Teaching and Student Learning Experience

* Lead and contribute to teaching on undergraduate English modules.
* Use appropriate teaching, learning and assessment methods.
* Ensure that module delivery and assessment comply with quality standards and regulations of the University.


Research Duties

* Production and dissemination of research outputs suitable for REF.
* Ability to lead research projects and contribute to the process of securing research or enterprise funding.


Managing People and Resources

* As module leader, co‑coordinate with others (such as support staff or academic colleagues) to ensure student needs and expectations are met.
* Co‑coordinate the work of others to ensure modules are delivered to the standards required.


Pastoral Care

* Be responsible for pastoral care of students within a specified area.
* Use listening, inter personal and pastoral care skills to deal with sensitive issues concerning students and refer students as appropriate to services providing further support.
* Appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances.


Skills and experience

* First degree, MA and PhD in a relevant field, awarded by the time of application. (Essential)
* Experience of teaching English literary studies at undergraduate level, including design of teaching materials for classes. (Essential)
* Experience of marking and assessment at undergraduate level. (Essential)
* Experience of, or demonstrable capacity for, undergraduate dissertation supervision. (Desirable)
* The ability to use IT effectively for teaching and learning. (Essential)
* Experience of, or demonstrable capacity for, excellent student support and pastoral care. (Desirable)
* Excellent organisation and time management, the ability to take initiative and work independently. (Essential)
* Experience of teaching Creative Writing at undergraduate level. (Desirable)
* Have published and/or presented their writing and research externally. (Essential)
* Have experience of leading research funding proposals (Desirable)
