AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers, the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that enable customers to access the innovation they rely on. As Chief Engineer you will ensure that all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center operates at peak efficiency through planned preventative maintenance, daily corrective work, and emergency response. You are the primary focal point for all facility operations and support Amazon across its owned and operated data centers.
You should be able to manage large‑scale projects from conception to completion, collaborate with engineering, automation, procurement, and finance teams, and drive innovation and resiliency while reducing operational costs.
Key Job Responsibilities
* Train and support the Engineering team in electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting and operations.
* Implement and execute site‑specific training exercises for standby generators, switchgear, UPSs, PDUs, AHUs, chillers, etc.
* Oversee day‑to‑day operation and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment in data center sites.
* Operate independently with limited direct management.
* Assist in the design and build‑out of new facilities and perform root cause analysis of equipment failures.
* Act as an escalation point for all facilities‑related issues within the region, including on‑call support during over‑time hours.
* Troubleshoot and report facility and data‑center‑level events within internal Service Level Agreements (SLA).
* Create and deploy standard practices for Engineering Operations Technicians, Chief Engineers, and vendor support teams.
* Ensure all safety procedures are adhered to by vendors and AWS staff.
* Respond to off‑hour emergency calls and aid in investigation, mitigation, and recovery.
* Lift up to 40 lbs and work in elevated locations as required.
* Provide after‑hours support in a 24/7 environment, delivering reasonable accommodations where applicable.
Physical Requirements
* Work at height and on ladders.
* Perform physical tasks during shift.
* Work in a noisy environment, using ear protection.
Basic Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
* Extensive industry experience with in‑depth knowledge of UPS, backup generators, and generic mechanical‑room infrastructure.
* NVQ Level 3 in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
* BS7671 18th Edition certification.
* High/Low Voltage Authorised Person (AP) experience.
* Previous experience in operations and on‑call support for Data Center or Mission Critical facilities.
* Fundamental knowledge of network design, low‑voltage (copper/fibre) cabling.
