Across the UK, especially in Scotland, we are assisting clients with pumped storage hydroelectric projects to support the country's journey to Net Zero. Our North sub-region has a team of over 100 multidisciplinary engineers working on various infrastructure projects.
Arup has an established dams and reservoir business serving a broad range of clients, from major water utilities to private owners. Our business is expanding, and we seek to grow our specialist team to deliver projects such as studies, investment advice, remedial works, new assets, and discontinuance.

The Opportunity
We are seeking civil engineers based in Glasgow or Edinburgh to deliver projects within our major client portfolios. We value technical excellence and outstanding client service.
The ideal candidate will guide projects within our Energy, Water, and Resources engineering team. As part of an established and growing team, you will support our dams and reservoir business, build client relationships, deliver design work, and mentor junior engineers and specialists, sharing your skills. You will have the chance to make a meaningful impact on Arup, your career, our staff, and the communities we serve.
We are looking for self-motivated civil engineers with curiosity, personal drive, and technical expertise. Applicants should have a background in civil engineering with strong geotechnical, hydraulic, and civil skills, and experience in designing water-retaining structures. A passion for dams and reservoirs and a goal to achieve Panel Engineer certification are desirable.
Is this role right for you?
We seek candidates with the following qualifications, attributes, and skills:
* MEng or MSc in Civil Engineering or related field
* Chartered or working towards Chartered Civil Engineer status
* Experience in civil infrastructure design, especially in geotechnics, hydraulic structures, dams, river engineering, or water utilities, with a focus on dams and reservoirs
* Knowledge of Eurocodes and British Standards
* Ability to work in teams, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines
* Working towards or certified as a Supervising Engineer under relevant Reservoir Acts
* Proficiency in reviewing drawings and 3D modeling software such as Civil 3D, Revit, or similar
* Interest in managing large data sets and utilizing digital design tools and coding creatively and efficiently
