Locum Consultant in Major Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery
This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedics surgeon, with special interests in Major Trauma. The post involves delivering 10 PAs supporting the Major Trauma team (Mr Kanakaris, Professor Giannoudis, Mr Harwood, Mr Foster, Mr Taylor, Mr Kapoor, Mr Bakhshayesh, Ms Lowery, Mr Vollans). The position is based at Leeds General Infirmary.
The CSU provides core services including Vascular Surgery, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Major Trauma, Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedics, Plastic Surgery, and Paediatric Plastic Surgery.
Leeds Major Trauma Centre (MTC) Service
Leeds General Infirmary became a level 1 trauma centre on 2nd April 2013, serving a regional population of nearly 3 million. The centre handles trauma calls, patient care coordination, emergency admissions, and emergency operations. It is the second busiest trauma centre in England, with top-quality outcomes according to TARN data.
The MTC operates within the West Yorkshire Major Trauma Network, providing comprehensive trauma care from incident to rehabilitation across the region. The team conducts daily multidisciplinary meetings and manages acute admissions from around the region.
Major Trauma Nurse specialists coordinate patient care from emergency department entry through recovery, supporting patients and families throughout the process. The network was established in 2013 to unify trauma care across West Yorkshire, ensuring timely access to appropriate care levels.
Significant investments have enhanced facilities, including a dedicated MTC ward and theatre, and increased staffing. Leeds MTC is the second largest in the country and consistently ranks in the top three for outcomes. It has led nationally in managing major limb trauma requiring combined plastic and orthopaedic surgery.
Junior Medical Staff
The service supports 16 Specialty Trainee Registrars (ST3-ST8), 5 Trust-grade registrar posts, 3 Core Trainee grades, 5 trust grades, and 12 FY doctors. Additionally, there are two specialist Orthopaedic posts.
Objectives of the Post
* Deliver care to patients with major trauma injuries at Leeds General Infirmary
* Manage outpatient clinics
* Supervise patients and care for inpatients on a 1 in 10 rota
* Contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings
* Support Leeds as a Training Centre for National Trainees in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery
* Provide clinical support and expertise to teams in referring centres
* Collaborate with consultant colleagues across Leeds hospitals and the Major Trauma network
