Job Overview
The Management Accountant is responsible for providing high standard financial reports, maintaining robust controls, and ensuring compliance with procedural and legislative requirements for a large‑scale biomass renewable energy plant operating through a complex multi‑entity structure. It involves intricate financial, contractual and technical accounting obligations, including consolidated reporting, multi‑layered debt structures and extensive lender oversight. Working closely with the Financial Controller and Finance Manager, the role plays a key part in delivering accurate management accounts, statutory compliance, supporting audit processes, preparing tax returns, budgeting, invoicing, and managing payment cycles.
Key Responsibilities
1. Prepare monthly management accounts for portfolio companies, ensuring clarity, precision, and timely review for the Finance Manager. This includes supporting the accounts with high-quality, well-substantiated balance sheet reconciliations.
2. Ensure full compliance with contractual documentation, regulatory standards, and all Vercity policies and procedures, maintaining a strong control environment across the portfolio.
3. Maintain financial governance, including oversight of payments and bank instructions, statutory books, loan note registers, sales invoice approvals, and overall integrity of portfolio financial records.
4. Provide confident client‑facing support, attending regular finance meetings with the client to discuss operational or process matters.
5. Manage a broad range of advanced technical accounting activities, including generation accruals, construction accruals, RQM adjustments and detailed fixed asset register. In addition to consolidation activities and reconciliations of financial inputs, resolving discrepancies with senior stakeholders and supporting refinancing and drawdown calculations.
6. Support statutory and regulatory reporting by preparing quarterly corporation tax calculations, reviewing VAT and other tax returns, preparing annual statutory accounts including at a consolidation level, and coordinating the statutory audit process.
7. Contribute to planning and reporting cycles by preparing annual operating budgets, maintaining the project finance calendar, producing interim accounts, and completing dividend or loan note certificates as required.
8. Partner effectively with stakeholders, providing high-quality financial information to Finance Managers and project team, resolving queries promptly, and building trusted relationships both internally and externally.
9. Provide supportive and effective line management to junior colleagues by assigning tasks, ensuring the accuracy of their work, offering constructive feedback, and actively nurturing their professional growth and development.
10. Support continuous improvement by enhancing finance systems, processes, and team capability. This includes coaching colleagues and assisting with ad hoc project work.
The skills you’ll bring
11. ACA, ACCA, or CIMA qualification with strong post-qualification experience in a similar role is essential; sector-specific experience is not required.
12. Demonstrates expertise in preparing clear, insightful management accounts that facilitate informed decision-making.
13. Possesses strong Excel skills and is confident using financial systems. Experience using Iplicit or CCH is desirable.
14. Comfortable handling technical accounting topics, compliance requirements, and contractual obligations.
15. Communicates financial information effectively to colleagues at all levels, even when dealing with complex subjects.
16. Organised, proactive, and capable of balancing multiple priorities while consistently delivering high-quality work.
17. Confident in speaking up, challenging constructively, and offering practical solutions when issues arise.
18. Enjoys supporting others, contributing to a positive team atmosphere, and helping colleagues develop and grow.
