As a key member of the pre-construction and delivery teams, the Design Manager is responsible for managing the design process from pre-construction stage through to construction and completion. The role ensures that design is coordinated, compliant, buildable, and aligned with the client brief, programme, and commercial objectives.
Working closely with internal teams, consultants, subcontractors, and clients, the Design Manager supports successful project delivery by ensuring that design information is issued on time, risks are managed, and all stakeholders are aligned throughout the design and construction process.
Overview
The Design Manager at Aptus will oversee the development and execution of project designs, ensuring quality, compliance, and alignment with client expectations. Responsibilities include leading design processes, collaborating with internal and external teams, coordinating design documentation, and managing budgets and timelines. This is a full-time hybrid role based in Newcastle Upon Tyne, offering a combination of office presence and flexibility to work from home.
Experience
* Proven experience in a Design Manager role within construction or the built environment (desirable)
* Strong understanding of the design and construction process from preconstruction through to delivery
* Experience coordinating multi-disciplinary design teams and managing design deliverables
* Strong knowledge of design risk management, buildability, and design change control
* Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
* Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
* Confident in reviewing design information and identifying coordination issues and project risk
* Understanding of construction contracts and employer’s requirements desirable
* Knowledge of Building Regulations, statutory approvals, and compliance processes desirable
