Overview

A Vacancy at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated physiotherapist to take on a leadership role within our dynamic respiratory team. The post offers the opportunity to lead and further develop the out-patient respiratory physiotherapy service, including care of patients with complex long-term respiratory conditions (eg COPD, bronchiectasis, asthma and dysfunctional breathing) across both the University Hospital and St. Cross Hospital sites. Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.


Responsibilities

* Provide a highly specialist, high standard physiotherapy service, assessing and advising on patient care and treatment, as an autonomous practitioner within the defined patient group.
* Be one of the clinical leads for therapy staff across the service area, providing clinical advice and training and liaising with other appropriate therapy leads to ensure an integrated service is provided for the service area.
* Provide support and advice for the continuous development, co‑ordination and evaluation of the input to the outpatient clinics with in‑reach to the medicine wards.
* Provide a source of expert clinical opinion within the field of medical respiratory physiotherapy for therapy staff and other health care professionals both internal and external to the Trust.
* Provide knowledge and expertise on the physiotherapy assessment and management of a broad range of medical respiratory conditions.
* Be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of patients in own care.
* Ensure a high standard of clinical care for patients under own management and support more junior staff to do likewise.
* Interpret and analyse clinical and non‑clinical facts to form accurate diagnosis and prognosis on a wide range of highly complex conditions to recommend the best course of intervention, evaluate outcomes, reassess and develop comprehensive treatment plans.
* Undertake comprehensive assessment of patients, including those with complex presentation, investigate, analyze skills, and formulate individualized management and treatment plans.
* Assess patient understanding of treatment proposals and gain informed consent in order to work within the legal framework for patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
* Accept clinical responsibility for own caseload and organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to the clinical progress of the patient; oversee and supervise the caseload of more junior staff to ensure patients are prioritised according to acuity of need across the service areas.
* Provide highly specialist clinical technical services contributing to diagnosis, care of treatment within the speciality as appropriate.
* Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times.
* Deliver training to rotational staff to ensure competence in carrying out duties within the service area.
* Look at the clinical competencies of the staff within the medicine team, identify gaps in knowledge and put in a development/training plan.
* Regularly participate in working parties developing policy changes within the Therapy Department and other specialities within the Clinical Support group.
* Work with Consultants and other agencies to refer patients and develop the strategic and operational management of the specialist service area within the relevant professional service guidelines and practices.
* Provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers and other professionals to promote understanding of the aims of the Therapy Department and to ensure a constant approach to patient care.
* Provide specialist advice, teaching and training to other members of the MDT regarding the management of patients.
* Regularly manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring high and unpredictable levels of physical effort according to patient dependency and clinical need.
