My client, a leading recycled metal trading group, is seeking an experienced Yard Manager to lead their newly opened yard based in Birmingham to success. The group is a large exporter of ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals through its trading entites. This yard will initially focus on non-ferrous metals (NFE) and will later expand into both a non-ferrous and ferrous yard, with plans to add a shredder.

This role brings an exciting opportunity for a yard manager to use their experience to start their own yard from the ground up, being a key player in the success of the site and the company. You will take ownership of all aspects of establishing a functioning and well managed site including; overseeing policy relating to health and safety, taking ownership of viewing new machinery and making recommendations on the best machinery to buy for the yard, as well as overseeing other team members such as machine operators and much more.

The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 4 years’ experience as a Yard manager withinthe metal recycling industry and have certification and experience in machine operation and people management.

Essential Skills & Experience:

* Minimum of 4 years’ experience as a yard/site manager within the metal recycling industry.
* IOSH or NEBOSH certified – managing safely for metal recycling
* Certified to operate 360 Crane (grab and magnet, wheeled or tracked), FLT, Cherry Picker, Telehandler.
* Demonstrated knowledge operating a weighbridge and understanding the “in and out” process.
* Extensive knowledge on paperwork procedures for loading out and incoming loads, including knowledge regarding safety, for example Sealed Containers.
* Ability to manage a team of at least 10 team members, including machine operators, buyers and weighbridge operators.
* Strong knowledge around Health and Safety, able to effectively develop safe working procedures and complete risk assessments.
* Demonstrated ability to deal with customer queries, resolve site issues etc.
* Knowledge of environmental health guidelines for metal recycling sites.
* Understanding of machinery safety requirements, including annual inspections and defect reporting and repair.
* Able to form solid relationships with vendors and repairers alike to obtain the best services for the yard at the best prices.
* Previous experience as a yard manager with a shredder would be highly desirable.

Duties & Role:

* Oversee site operations, ensuring health, safety and environment is top priority and kept in line with local guidance and legislation.
* Develop health and safety policies, safe working procedures and emergency procedures for the site.
* Initially, operate the weighbridge and learn the weighbridge system, in preparation for a weighbridge operative to be hired.
* Operate various machinery around the yard to ensure day to day functions are completed, further, provide cover on machinery for sickness/leave.
* Monitor machinery, developing and implementing an effective defect log and repair schedule for machinery.
* Develop relationships with vendors and providers for safety equipment, general yard consumables and machinery repairs.
* Conduct safety inductions for all new starters at the site.
* Resolve client issues, payment discrepancies and weight discrepancies.
* Inspect and accurately categorise material, ensuring the correct prices are paid and the yard is not over-paying for materials.
* Manage the site team, overseeing performance, absence, holidays etc.
* Conduct investigations relating to safety concerns or misconduct with team members.
* Provide continuous training to site staff.
* Take an on-call phone and have emergency procedures in place.

This role holds a lot of responsibility and for the first 6 months will be intense whilst the yard gets up and running, during the first 6 months there is an expectation that the yard manager will take an on call phone for out of hours emergencies and will also work some extended hours, for example, being at the site an hour before official opening and staying an hour after the yard closes. After the first 6 months are completed and the yard is running smoothly, the hours can be adjusted, and an assistant manager may be brought in to assist if operations permit.

Salary & Benefits:

* £38,000 to £45,000 per year salary
