Erewash Borough Council is embracing the opportunities created by the Renters’ Rights Act and is expanding its Private Sector Housing Team. This is an exciting time to join us in a senior role as we strengthen our work with residents, landlords and partner organisations to ensure homes across the Borough are safe, healthy and fit to live in.
The role
As a Senior Housing Standards Officer, your work will directly contribute to tackling the poor housing conditions that affect physical and mental health by leading a team and driving improvements in residents’ homes and supporting healthier, safer communities.
* Managing and supporting the Housing Standards Team
* Inspecting and licensing Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs)
* Identifying hazards using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS)
* Preparing statutory notices, schedules of works and taking enforcement action
* Providing expert technical advice and ensuring consistent, lawful decision‑making
* Developing procedures, policies and service improvements
* Monitoring performance, managing data systems and producing reports
* Working with residents, landlords, colleagues and partners to achieve positive outcomes
About you
You will bring substantial experience and confidence in regulatory housing enforcement together with strong leadership skills and a commitment to improving standards for residents.
Requirements
* Experience of housing enforcement, including HMO licensing.
* A Certificate of Competence in applying HHSRS and practical experience in applying this.
* An honours degree (2:2 or above) in Building and Construction, Construction Management, Surveying or a related discipline or equivalent qualification/experience, or an HND with at least three years’ relevant experience, or qualified Environmental Health Practitioner status (CEnvH) with housing experience.
* Experience of leading projects, services or teams
