An opportunity has arisen within the Private Sector Housing team at Crawley Borough Council, for a Private Sector Housing Officer to join the team on a 12 month fixed term contract.
Working as part of a small, supportive and knowledgeable team, you will play a key role in delivering a high quality service to private sector residents, that makes a real difference within our town.
Your role will include:
* Ensure the council fulfils its statutory duties in relation to private sector housing
* Responding to private sector housing service requests in a timely manner and carry out inspections and investigations in accordance with relevant housing legislation and council policy and procedures
* Taking a lead role in private sector housing enforcement, case management and investigations including issuing specification of remedial works, statutory notices, imposing financial penalties and representing the council at Tribunal hearings
* Processing and determining House in Multiple Occupancy (HMO) Licence applications in accordance with the Housing Act 2004 and the council’s own HMO standards
* Delivering the council’s statutory Disabled Facility Grants (DFG) and Discretionary Loans services
You will manage a varied and challenging caseload, working both independently and collaboratively within a small team to achieve positive outcomes.
To be successful in this role it is important that you are self‑motivated with an eye for detail. You will have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate confidently and sensitively with tenants, landlords and other interested partners to achieve the required outcomes.
You will have proven experience of inspecting properties, identifying hazardous housing conditions and specifying remedial works for disrepair is essential for this position. Essential experience also includes carrying out Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) risk assessments. Processing HMO licence and DFG applications is also essential for this position. Knowledge of relevant housing legislation including the Renters Rights Act 2025 is also essential.

This is a 12 month fixed term contract opportunity.
You will work 37 hours per week across five days (Monday to Friday). This role benefits from being included in the council’s flexitime system.
Ability to attend evening meetings as and when required.
May, on occasions, be required to work in confined areas and climb ladders.
A full current UK driving licence will be a requirement of the role.
Satisfactory clearance of a basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be a condition of your employment.
