Job Description The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students, to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role. The main purpose of this role is to provide research support to the Project Lead for the research project 'The symbol of the bee in the urban linguistic landscape of Manchester' and will involve research data collection and analysis. The research is primarily in the field of sociolinguistics, exploring the linguistic landscape of Manchester. Dates : 25 May - 5 June 2026 Hours : 16 hours per week over a two-week period (32 hours in total) Location : Manchester city centre Key Tasks Research Activities Take photos of the bee symbol in and around public spaces in Manchester city centre Undertake an online survey of perspectives on the bee symbol in Manchester Conduct semi-structured interviews about the bee symbol in Manchester Assist with data analysis Apply knowledge of linguistics or related academic specialisms to the data analysis Plan and prioritise own work and resources, within research project framework, in order to determine the most effective way to achieve agreed research objectives. Use initiative and judgement to develop appropriate techniques in order to facilitate research work and resolve problems affecting the achievement of objectives and deadlines. Liaison and Networking Discuss the research and findings with the Project Lead and participate in the dissemination of research findings. Service Provision Proactively and effectively engage with quality assurance procedures to ensure that University standards are upheld. Team Working Actively participate as a member of the research team, offering general help and guidance to the Project Lead. Other Must be located near Manchester city centre or at least able to travel to Manchester city centre frequently during duration of the role. Person Specification This role is only open to current Manchester Met students who meet the criteria below: Essential * Knowledge of linguistics, semiotics or a language-related specialism, including an understanding of relevant research methods and techniques in the area. * Ability to undertake research by preparing, setting up, conducting and recording the outcome of field work. * Proficient at taking photos of public spaces. * Located near Manchester city centre or at least able to travel to and around Manchester city centre frequently during duration of the role. * Ability to use initiative, creativity and judgement to develop appropriate approaches in order to further research. * Possess sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge to work within an established researcher. * Experience of prioritising work independently and as part of a team in order to deliver individual and team objectives Desirable * Undergraduate or postgraduate student on a linguistics or language degree programme * Experience of data collection, especially surveys, questionnaires and/or semi-structured interviews How to Apply Please apply via the Apply button, completing the form on the next page and attaching your covering letter and CV, as a single document, in either .docx (preferred for accessibility) or .pdf format.
