Job Description Summary

As a Hospitalist Physician at SSH, you will report to the Chief of the Department of Medicine through the Hospitalist Program directors. Your duties include providing medical services with diligence, adhering to professional standards, laws, and SSH policies. You will serve exclusively for SSH, with other engagements requiring written approval. Teamwork, flexibility, and respect are essential, and confidentiality must be maintained per HIPAA standards. Your roles include admitting, attending physician coverage, and performing consults, using approved SSH treatment plans. Supervision of Physician Extenders, response to emergency codes, participation in the Rapid Response Team, and involvement in educational and policy meetings are also expected.

Job Description

Essential Functions


1. Patient Care


a. Provide clinically appropriate care, respond promptly to emergencies, and attend all codes.

b. Prioritize tasks to meet patient care needs.

c. Show compassion and professionalism with patients.

d. Maintain patient confidentiality.


2. Communication


a. Keep patients, families, and healthcare team informed.

b. Communicate actively with hospitalists, PCPs, and specialists.

c. Be receptive to feedback and constructive criticism.


3. Documentation


a. Write clear admission H&Ps with focused evaluation plans.

b. Maintain well-written progress notes, review abnormal findings, and justify continued inpatient care.

c. Document rhythm reviews and rationale for telemetry monitoring.

d. Dictate discharge summaries on the day of discharge, including follow-up plans and unresolved issues.

e. Clearly identify primary care physicians in documentation.

f. Ensure handwriting is legible, orders are timely, and records are completed weekly.

g. Follow institutional guidelines on abbreviations and comply with E&M coding and HIPAA regulations.


4. Teamwork


a. Contribute to professional growth and participate in meetings.

b. Establish cooperative relationships with team members and referral physicians.

c. Respond promptly to ED physicians and facilitate patient flow.

d. Start shifts on time and complete paperwork timely.

e. Promote courtesy and mutual respect.


5. Efficiency


a. Meet productivity expectations for admissions and rounding.

b. Discharge patients promptly and manage priorities effectively.


6. Overall


a. Commit to high patient and referral physician satisfaction.

b. Be a knowledgeable and valuable team member.


Technology and Learning


a. Engage in continuous learning and adopt new technologies and procedures.

b. Embrace advances that enhance communication and efficiency.

Additional requirements include ACLS certification, Board Certification maintenance, DEAx number for prescribing Buprenorphine/Suboxone, an Internal or Family Medicine background, flexibility for night and weekend shifts, fluency in English, and experience in direct patient care. The physician must be available for a flexible schedule across a 24/7/365 cycle.
