Job Summary
To ensure the continued delivery of high-quality care to patients within the trust and to contribute to the further development of the Emergency Medicine service. To provide support and leadership to the Emergency Department nursing and medical staff. The appointed consultant would be expected to contribute to the on-going service improvement programme developing:
* Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT)
* Cost Improvement programme (CIP)
* Implementing evidence based new ways of working when necessary
We also encourage consultants to apply for fellowship of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management, to which we are an affiliated member.
Main duties of the job
* Provide senior clinician services to the Emergency Department as per job plan or as agreed within the Trust, and as required when on call.
* Provide clinical leadership to the department when undertaking clinical care, taking lead clinical responsibility as rostered on a day to day basis. Facilitate safe and effective clinical care.
* Teaching and training of junior staff, medical students and other healthcare professionals.
* Act as clinical/educational supervisor to locally employed doctors and doctors in training programmes of a variety of grades and experience as appropriate.
* Actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
* Provide leadership and support for the effective development of the service.
* Have responsibility for ensuring active participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
* Further develop clinical protocols, guidelines, and concise care bundles.
* Carry out responsibilities with due regard to the Trust's Equal Opportunities Policy.

Job Description
Job responsibilities
A formal job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and their Clinical Director and consultant colleagues, on behalf of the Medical Director within 3 months of starting in post. A full-time job plan is based on a 10 PA working week. The plan is reviewed annually and sets out the consultant's duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the coming year, covering clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It provides a clear schedule of commitments, internal and external, with personal objectives linking to wider service improvements and trust priorities. For a full-time contract, the weekly allocation is typically:
* 8.5 Programmed Activities (PAs) of Direct Clinical Care
* 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs)
The allocation of PAs is reviewed and may be adjusted when required by service demand. If a candidate cannot work full-time, modification of the job content will be discussed with the Trust in coordination with other consultant colleagues.
Qualifications
Essential
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* FRCEM or equivalent experience.
* Current certification in ATLS, ALS, APLS/EPLS or equivalent, with at least one at instructor level.
Experience
* Full Registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council.
* Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients within the Emergency Department.
* Meets the criteria set out in the Specialist generic capabilities framework.
Desirable
* Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register.
