Overview
This exciting new post in Adult Allergy will involve the postholder working alongside the existing team Steve Jenkins (Respiratory Consultant) and Kathryn Powrie (Allergy nurse specialist). The Allergy service at Broomfield has developed over time and now takes referrals from a catchment area of 1.2 million across Mid and South Essex. It is hoped that the expanded capacity as a result of this new post will allow the team to take referrals from a wider catchment area.
The team offers a wide range of services including subcutaneous and sublingual immunotherapy, food and drug challenge testing, and biologic administration for urticaria and severe asthma. The allergy department at Broomfield is in the process of applying for registration with the IQAS (Improving Quality in Allergy Services). There is a strong focus on governance, patient safety and patient experience. The allergy team sits within the wider department of Respiratory medicine which provides mutual and administrative support.
Responsibilities
* Part time (0.5 WTE) post with no on call commitments.
* Two allergy clinics per week, plus a fortnightly challenge session.
* Further clinical time for inpatient referrals and triage of GP referrals.
* The postholder would be encouraged to develop new services and special interests, such as transition clinics, liaison with Acute Medicine, and joint clinics with ENT, anaesthetic assessment, and Dermatology.
Team and Environment
Currently there are two whole time equivalent allergy nurse specialists working within the team. There are no medical allergy trainees in the department, although this would be a future aspiration. The postholder would be encouraged to develop new services and special interests, such as transition clinics, liaison with Acute Medicine, and joint clinics with ENT, anaesthetic assessment, and Dermatology. The team sits within the wider department of Respiratory medicine, with governance and patient safety priorities and opportunities for non-clinical development.
Development and Opportunities
The post offers opportunities to spend non-clinical sessions at Addenbrooke’s for development and Continuous Medical Education (CME). The postholder would be encouraged to contribute to service development and collaboration with other specialties.
