Job overview

An opportunity has arisen within the removable prosthodontics section of the Dental Laboratory at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital to recruit a Highly Specialised Dental Technician/Section Leader.

Candidates will require a Bsc Hons/Foundation Degree; BTEC Diploma in Dental Technology/City & Guilds Final or SCOTVEC or equivalent. A Postgraduate Masters Degree/ recognised secondary qualification or equivalent relevant experience.

The successful candidate will manage the prosthodontics technical laboratory ensuring all business targets are met through effective management and sound leadership in conjunction with their job share.

Undertake the duties of a highly specialist dental technician to clinical prescription. This involves the planning, design and construction of a full range of custom made removable prosthodontic appliances. The majority of the work will be of a highly complex nature. Candidates should also have significant experience within prosthodontics.

You will be required to work as part of a team and have excellent communication skills. The candidate will also be expected to support the move towards utilising new technologies within removable prosthodontics.

Main duties of the job

Undertake the duties of a highly specialist dental technician to clinical prescription. This involves the planning, design and construction of a full range of custom made removable prosthodontic appliances.

The majority of the work will be of a highly complex nature and will include, but is not limited to:

* Complete and partial acrylic dentures
* Complete and partial cobalt-chromium dentures
* Removable and fixed implant-retained dentures
* Peek, acetyl resin and polyamide based dentures
* Overlay and onlay dentures
* Immediate and straight-to-fit dentures
* Solid and hollow box obturators for cleft palate and maxillo-facial/oncology patients
* Dentures incorporating precision attachments
* Hard and soft gingival veneers
* Hard/bilaminar occlusal splints for TMJ disorders
* Soft splints and bleaching/fluoride trays
* Hard/bilaminar surgical cover plates

Dentures and appliances may be made via traditional analogue or CAD CAM techniques

The postholder will have excellent knowledge of denture design and will contribute to treatment planning with clinicians of all grades.

* Diploma/Degree in Dental Technology recognised by the GDC
* Postgraduate Masters Degree/ recognised secondary qualification or equivalent relevant experience
* Current GDC registration
* Management qualification e.g., ILM 3, or willing to work towards

Personal Qualities

* Excellent team working and leadership skills
* Excellent communication skills with a comprehensive understanding of medical and dental terminology. Understanding of highly complex, sensitive information. Be able to converse with patients with compassion and empathy
* Professional and empathetic approach when attending clinic where patients may have facial deformities, be undergoing oncology treatment, have dental phobias etc,
* Proactive approach to service development and change management for the department, the laboratory and the wider dental department as a whole
* Excellent organisational skills, ability to act independently and on own initiative, to prioritise work and manage multiple tasks for self and others
* Ability to analyse complex problems, formulate solutions and implement sustainable change.
* Highly developed physical skills with excellent dexterity and the ability to concentrate for long periods of time
* Able to maintain confidentiality
* IT literate
* Demonstrates a proactive approach to supporting staff health and wellbeing. Knowledge of CoSHH and PPE due to frequent exposure to hazardous dusts and chemicals
