Job Title: Senior Process Scientist. Location: Flexible. Contract Type: Permanent. Hours: 37 per week. Salary: From £39,000 based on skills and experience. Closing Date: 01 May 2026.
As a Senior Process Scientist, you will monitor and provide technical support to Wastewater Operations in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Your role involves investigating, advising upon, and implementing corrective actions to ensure wastewater compliance and the smooth running of plants and sites. You will also advise on operation, optimisation, and investment needs for existing and new assets that impact wastewater quality and treatment efficiency. A clean driver’s licence and access to your own vehicle are required, and you will participate in a standby rota as part of a hybrid office and site role.
Accountabilities
* Make decisions affecting plant and processes to improve operations at sites and mitigate risks that could impact costs or the environment.
* Monitor and optimise operation of the WTW and downstream assets to ensure final effluent meets all internal and statutory requirements.
* Work closely with relevant departments on optimisation and improvement of wastewater treatment processes, including Planning and Resilience, Construction and Operations.
* Undertake regular site visits and take impactful action to improve process performance.
* Take personal responsibility for health and safety of self and colleagues.
* Escalate complex or impactful decisions to the Principal Process Scientist and senior managers when necessary.
* Collaborate with other staff on site to maintain collective accountability for effluent/product quality.
* Mentor, train and guide new Process Scientists to ensure their work meets required standards.
Qualifications and Experience
* Degree or higher in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline.
* Sound understanding of wastewater chemistry/biology/engineering and principles of wastewater treatment.
* Knowledge of regulatory requirements for WTW permit compliance.
* Ability to solve operational and technical issues that are complex and not clear‑cut.
* Investigative skills including data analysis, process mapping and auditing.
* Strong communication skills to summarise technical issues for non‑technical audiences, both written and verbal.
