Offer description

Applications are invited for two full-time locum posts (initially 12 months) with the real opportunity of conversion to a substantive post.

Applicants for this post are required to have CCT or equivalent (or within 6 months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT, at the time of interview) with training in gynaecological oncology in the UK, and entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Obstetrics and Gynaecology +/- Gynaecological Oncology.

The postholder is expected to work in a Team of five full time Gynaecological Oncologists and two half academic, half clinical Gynaecological Oncologists, and will be supported by a multidisciplinary team. The Team has a strong portfolio in ultra-radical ovarian cancer surgery, HIPEC, pelvic exenterative surgery, minimal invasive surgery, robotics surgery, vulval surgery and the post holder is expected to participate in this work. Mentoring for consultants is of course widely available within the team.

Birmingham became home to one of the first three gynaecological cancer centres in the United Kingdom in the 1970's and as such has been instrumental in the development of gynaecological oncology as a profession. Over the decades, our service has evolved and developed resulting in national and international recognition for the high-level care provided by the multidisciplinary team. In addition, our Centre has a strong research history having led the development of some key clinical trials, contributed to many national and international trials, and has a strong in-house academic programme in conjunction with the University of Birmingham. Birmingham also has an excellent reputation for training and education and is one of the most prestigious gynaecological oncology training centres in the United Kingdom.

The Cancer Centre is hosted by the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) where all inpatient activity is carried out. The outpatient clinics and the specialist MDT meetings are hosted by the Birmingham Treatment Centre at the site of the former City Hospital just a mile from MMUH.

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWB) serves Birmingham and the Black Country – one of the country's most culturally diverse areas. It's a friendly and welcoming place – a place where you can belong, and a place where you can grow.

We care for our patients, we care about our population, and we care about our people.

Our values – Ambition, Respect and Compassion – are at the heart of who we are. They guide us every step of the way; how we work with each other, and how we look after our patients and their families; how we respect and value the rich diversity of our team and our community.

Our Trust has always aspired to be more than a hospital, more than a healthcare provider. Our purpose is to "Improve the Life Chances and Health Outcomes of our Population." It is what inspires, drives, and unites us every day. It's what makes us unique.

We want working at SWB to feel like more than just a job. We want our Trust to be a place where you can feel you belong. A place where you feel happy, safe, and rewarded. A place where you can develop your career in whatever way you choose. When we say we're 'with you all the way' we want you to know that we mean it. Visit the SWB website to find out more about our ambitions and people plans.

The Cancer Centre Team is committed to continue to improve and develop the service to provide the best possible care for the women of Birmingham and the West Midlands. The Team is research active and the postholder will have opportunity and will be expected to participate in audits, clinical research and in representing the Centre in national and international forums.

The Pan-Birmingham Gynaecological Cancer Centre has a strong subspecialty training programme and trains two SSTs. The team is supported by clinical research fellows, an FY2 trainee and a advanced surgical care practitioner.

The Gynaecological Oncology Team provides 24/7 emergency cover for gynaecological oncology patients, which is separate from the general gynaecology and obstetrics rotas.
