The successful post holder will work in close partnership with senior nursing colleagues and operational managers to provide strong leadership and effective operational oversight across the Theatre Complex. The Theatre Complex is a diverse and high‑activity environment, comprising Main Theatres, Day Care Theatres, and the James Paget Orthopaedic Centre (JPOC), which functions as the Trust’s orthopaedic elective hub. The role requires the ability to manage complex operational demands, support service development and improvement, and contribute to the achievement of performance, quality and financial objectives in line with Trust strategy. A broad range of surgical specialties are delivered across the Theatre services, including General Surgery, Gynaecology, Obstetrics and Maternity, Trauma and Emergency Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology, Breast Surgery and Colorectal Surgery. The Clinical Operations Manager will play a key role in coordinating service delivery across these specialties, supporting workforce planning, theatre utilisation, patient flow and elective recovery. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced leader to contribute to the continued development of a dynamic Theatre service within a busy acute Trust, working collaboratively to enhance quality, safety, productivity and patient experience. The post holder will be accountable for the day‑to‑day operational management of the service, ensuring effective workforce management, appropriate skill mix, and the smooth and efficient running of daily activity. You will work collaboratively with senior nursing, medical, and operational colleagues to support service delivery, manage risk, address performance issues, and contribute to the strategic development of the department. In this leadership role, you will be expected to proactively identify opportunities for improvement, implement evidence‑based solutions, and provide assurance to senior managers regarding standards of care and operational performance. Detailed job description and main responsibilities Provide senior operational leadership across the Theatre Complex, ensuring the safe, effective and efficient delivery of elective and emergency surgical services. Maintain day‑to‑day operational oversight of Main Theatres, Day Care Theatres and the Orthopaedic Elective Hub (JPOC), ensuring optimal utilisation of theatre capacity. Lead on theatre scheduling, list management and patient flow to minimise delays, cancellations and inefficiencies, supporting elective recovery and RTT performance. Ensure robust escalation processes are in place to manage operational pressures, including emergency activity, staffing shortfalls and capacity constraints. Ensure all theatre services are delivered in line with Trust policies, national standards, CQC requirements and professional guidance. Actively promote a strong safety culture, ensuring incidents, risks, complaints and adverse events are appropriately managed, investigated and actioned. Work closely with clinical and nursing leads to support clinical governance processes, infection prevention and control, safeguarding and health and safety compliance. Monitor quality and performance indicators, supporting continuous improvement in patient experience, outcomes and access to care. Work collaboratively with the Theatre Matrons, Lead Nurses and senior clinicians to support workforce planning, skill‑mix, recruitment, retention and staff wellbeing. Support effective rostering and deployment of staff to meet service demand while ensuring compliance with working time regulations and Trust policies. Contribute to staff development by supporting appraisal, training, leadership development and succession planning within theatre teams. Foster positive multidisciplinary working relationships and promote a culture of respect, inclusion and accountability.
