Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a child and adolescent consultant psychiatrist to become involved in transformation and leadership within a forward looking CAMHS service. We are keen to shape the post to fit the needs of the right applicant and to support them in developing their interests within our broad portfolio of services. Durham Tees Valley Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services work with children and young people up to the age of 18 across Getting Help, Getting More help and neurodevelopmental assessment teams. Generic teams are closely linked with LD CAMHS, Eating Disorders and Forensic CAMHS. The out of hours activity is supported by dedicated CAMHS crisis team, which operates on 24 / 7 basis and provides extended crisis input as well as home treatment options as an alternative to hospital admissions. This is a replacement post following the moving of post by the previous substantive consultant within the same care group. The post has been covered by locum consultant psychiatrists in the interim. Durham Tees Valley Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services meet the mental and behaviour needs of children and young people up to the age of 18 years.

The service is split into: Getting Help CAMHS, Getting More Help CAMHS, LD CAMHS and Neurodevelopmental assessment teams, intensive Home treatment, Crisis and Intensive Positive Behaviour Support, Specialist services (Eating Disorders and Forensic CAMHS).

Main duties of the job

All referrals now come into the Single Point of Access at the Mulberry Centre, Darlington and are offered a face to face or telephone access to service assessment. Those coming into Specialist LD CAMHS are then offered an appointment for initial assessment. All young people open to the team have a Lead Professional / Care Coordinator. Consultant medical staff do not generally undertake initial assessments; they provide Lead Professional / Care Coordinator input for only a small number of cases. A multi‑agency Autism Spectrum Disorder Specialist Team operates Trustwide. The multi‑disciplinary Specialist Eating Disorder Team (which covers County Durham and Darlington) accepts referrals from North Durham LDCAMHS. Children and young people with attentional difficulties are assessed by the multidisciplinary team. We currently have trained nurse prescribers who work within this sub‑team and have plans to further develop this provision within the team. Young people presenting with immediate risk are assessed by the childrens Crisis Team which operates 24 hr cover soon, seven days a week. Medical staff provide daytime medical cover and out of hours through the on‑call rota. The CAMHS intensive home treatment team and Intensive Positive Behaviour Support team offer intensive home treatment to a small number of children and young people in crisis to prevent admission or to support after discharge from Inpatient units. There is access to Holly unit for out of the home behaviour support.

About us

We are one of the largest specialist mental health and learning disabilities trusts in the country, with an annual income of £320m and a workforce of some 6,700 staff operating from around 100 sites in Durham, Teesside, North Yorkshire and York and Selby. We provide a range inpatient and community services to 2m people living in County Durham, the Tees Valley, Scarborough, Whitby, Ryedale, Harrogate, Hambleton and Richmondshire. We also provide additional specialist services to other parts of Northern England. We deliver our services by working in partnership with eight local authorities and clinical commissioning groups, a wide range of voluntary organisations, as well as service users, their carers and the public. Psychiatrists are essential contributors to the majority of our mental health teams. Service users expect and are justified to expect collaborative relationships with dedicated psychiatrists who work consistently as part of effective services. Our medical staffing shortage puts strain on services and puts strain on workforce wellbeing and costs extend beyond the financial. The Medical Directorate and Medical Development Team are striving to improve medical workforce recruitment and retention in a variety of ways and the cornerstone of these efforts is The TEWV Charter for the Medical Workforce. (Please see attached Supporting Document). The Trust welcomes a conversation about flexible working.
