Job summary
Join our Main Theatre team to help ensure theatres run safely and efficiently, supporting high-quality patient care. You will contribute to maintaining a clean, safe and well-maintained environment behind the scenes.
Main duties of the job
Environmental Support Worker are part of the operating team who support the theatre staff. In this role, you will:
* Maintain Theatre Cleanliness & Standards – Carry out cleaning of theatres and associated areas in line with Trust policies and infection control standards; complete and record cleaning schedules accurately; inspect areas to ensure standards are met and escalate issues to the Theatre Coordinator; support HCIA audits and contribute to continuous improvement.
* Support a Safe Environment – Monitor theatre areas for environmental or safety issues and ensure faults are recorded and escalated; complete Datix reports where required; adhere to Health & Safety and infection control guidelines at all times.
* Equipment & Ancillary Area Cleaning – Clean medical equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions and Trust procedures; maintain cleanliness of storerooms, kitchens and non-clinical fridges; ensure all documentation and checklists are completed.
* Suction & Gas Cylinder Checks – Replace and dispose of suction canisters safely; check, store and replenish gas cylinders, ensuring adequate supply for daily theatre use; report any irregularities or safety concerns promptly.
* Waste Management – Work with portering and ancillary teams to ensure correct waste segregation and disposal; support inspections of dirty returns areas and escalate concerns; follow Trust protocols for sharps, needlestick incidents and body fluid contamination.
* Communication & Team Support – Communicate effectively with theatre staff about cleanliness, safety and environmental issues; ensure concerns are escalated appropriately through the Theatre Coordinator.
* Training & Personal Development – Participate in appraisal and maintain a personal development plan; complete mandatory training and maintain competency with relevant equipment.
There will be a rotation of shifts, including weekends.

* Basic General Education

* GCSE Maths & English grade C/4 or above OR Functional/Key skills level 2 in Maths and English
Knowledge & Experience

* Understanding of the concept and application of confidentiality

* Previous experience of working in a theatre setting
* Basic understanding of infection control principles
