Our client is a leading provider of support services for individuals with learning disabilities, committed to empowering individuals to lead fulfilling lives. They are seeking a passionate and experienced Horticulture Assistant to take the lead on a major transformation project developing a heritage garden and public attraction while guiding learners through practical horticultural activities in a safe and inclusive environment.

About the Role:

As the Horticulture Assistant, you will play a key role in turning the organisations garden into a vibrant, productive heritage site and public-facing attraction. This is a hands-on, learner-facing role where youll work directly with individuals with learning disabilities and complex needs, helping them develop practical gardening skills while promoting independence, confidence, and wellbeing.

You will also oversee plant and produce sales through the on-site shop, mentor a team of support staff and volunteers, and ensure all activities are delivered to the highest standards of care, safety, and inclusion. Reporting to the Senior Management Team, you'll help shape the future of the horticulture programme while championing person-centred development.

As the Deputy Head of Horticulture, your key responsibilities will include:

* Lead gardening sessions tailored to each Learners Individual Learning Plan (ILP), ensuring purposeful and enjoyable engagement.
* Monitor and manage the production of seasonal plants and vegetables for sale in the gift shop.
* Support Learners in building confidence, life skills, and independence through meaningful horticultural activities.
* Ensure all practices embed safeguarding and protect the welfare of every Learner.
* Encourage Learner progression toward volunteering, employment, or further skills development.
* Oversee volunteer performance, providing coaching and direction to ensure a positive learning environment.
* Conduct regular reviews to track Learner development and ensure activities remain aligned with individual goals.
* Maintain clear, up-to-date records of Learner attendance, progress, and activity participation.
* Model and promote respectful, inclusive, and values-based behaviour among staff, Learners, and volunteers.
* Respond professionally to behavioural challenges, supporting Learners with understanding and empathy.
* Carry out dynamic risk assessments to ensure health and safety across all activities and outdoor spaces.
* Support all aspects of garden and produce management, including safe use of tools, seasonal planning, and shop stocking.

The Horticulture Assistant will have the following skills and attributes:

* Proven experience in gardening, horticulture, or grounds management, particularly in heritage or public-facing gardens.
* Prior experience working with individuals with learning disabilities or complex needs is essential.
* NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care (or working towards it).
* Demonstrated knowledge of safeguarding, the Mental Capacity Act, and inclusive support principles.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to foster an inclusive, respectful, and learner-centred environment.
* Comfortable and respectful in delivering personal care when required.
* Previous experience in managing or mentoring volunteers and support staff would be a distinct advantage.

You will be working 25 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Appointment will be subject to DBS clearance, right to work checks and satisfactory references.
