Overview
Band 6 - Deputy Service Manager, Medicine. An exciting opportunity for a motivated Deputy Service Manager to join the Medicine Division, supporting Haematology, Nephrology, diabetes and endocrinology services. Full-time role (37.5 hours per week, Monday - Friday) requiring a proactive and highly organised individual who embodies Trust values. The role involves regular on-site presence across multiple sites: Watford General Hospital, Hemel Hempstead Hospital, and occasionally St Albans Hospital.
Responsibilities
* Provide operational oversight by managing day-to-day operational issues in the assigned specialties and ensuring alignment with departmental policies, procedures, and SOPs.
* Line management of administrative and clerical staff, including recruitment, training, performance management, and appraisals.
* Track performance against key metrics (e.g., PTL, 18-week waits, cancer targets); identify capacity gaps and develop mitigation strategies.
* Support the Service Manager in capacity management; adjust clinic templates and theatre sessions based on service needs.
* Manage requests for temporary or bank staff; ensure medical rotas are reviewed and adequately covered.
* Coordinate responses to PALS complaints and investigations; manage incident records in systems like DATIX.
* Attend finance meetings to gain experience in financial management for services.
* Provide cover for the Service Manager and assist the management team as needed; undertake additional duties as required to support service needs.
Requirements
* Essential: Good basic education including maths and English; educated to degree level or equivalent experience.
* Desirable: Recognised management qualification or evidence of working towards one; ongoing professional development.
* Knowledge of NHS waiting times, PTLs and RTT; familiarity with databases and spreadsheets; understanding of quality in health services.
* Essential: Relevant experience in an acute hospital setting; service management experience.
* Desirable: Experience in management of complaints; familiarity with CLINICOM PAS and DATIX; experience of PTL management.
