Overview

Job title: Portering & Domestic Operations Manager (Band 6) at Whittington Hospital NHS Trust. Full-time, permanent. Location: Whittington Hospital NHS Trust, Magdala Avenue, London, N19 5NF. Salary: £46,419 to £55,046 per year (inclusive of HCAs). Working pattern: Full-time. Date posted: 21 October 2025.

Role objective: Lead and be responsible for the efficient, high-quality, professional, and coordinated operational management of staff within the domestic department, ensuring delivery of services across the Trust and maintaining compliance with legislation, standards, and policy.


Responsibilities

* Direct line management of domestic supervisors and frontline staff; liaise with the facilities management team to ensure consistent, high-quality service across the Trust.
* Coordinate with ward and departmental managers to deliver services in line with legislation, service standards, SLAs, and Trust policies.
* Liaise with ward/department staff, IPC, Estates and Facilities, and contractors to support service delivery.
* Provide leadership and support to the Head of Portering and Domestic Services and teams to meet operational targets and drive service improvements.
* Ensure annual Personal Development Reviews (PDR) are carried out and that staff receive quality appraisals in line with Trust values and vision.
* Maintain financial and budgetary compliance; deliver services efficiently within budget and in accordance with legislation and Trust policy.
* Develop and implement change in response to changing demand; identify opportunities for service improvement and efficiency.


Job Responsibilities (Domestic Services)

* Manage, deliver and maintain a domestic cleaning service that achieves a clean and hygienic patient environment in line with National Specifications for Cleanliness and Trust policies.
* Control the issue of cleaning materials, consumables, and equipment; monitor third-party service providers (e.g., pest control, washroom services).
* Provide guidance on cleaning methods in light of legislation, regulations, and infection control; mitigate healthcare-associated infection risks through proper processes.
* Plan and supervise cleanliness monitoring and auditing; develop action plans to rectify procedural failures; analyse data to drive service improvements.
* Ensure remedial actions are taken in areas not meeting standards; deliver a consistent level of service and achieve target standards and performance.
* Contribute to continual service improvement; develop and implement policies and procedures to improve delivery and efficiency.
* Maintain high-quality service while managing costs; aim for high cleanliness scores in patient surveys, PLACE assessments, and CQC inspections.
* Manage patient complaints per Trust policy and procedures; work as part of the management team to ensure continuity of service.


Person Specification

Essential

* Qualifications: Degree level education or equivalent professional experience; management qualification or equivalent experience; BICSc CPSS, NVQ level 3; knowledge of COSHH.
* Skills: Proven experience managing a complex service with a diverse workforce in a customer/patient service environment; strong leadership, communication, and negotiation skills; ability to performance manage; computer literacy (Excel and Word); IOSH Working Safely; healthcare environment experience; contract and project management; knowledge of the New National Cleaning Standard 2021.
* Knowledge: Extensive experience in a cleaning team; budget management; minimum 3 years of managing Domestic Service Delivery in healthcare; delivering high-quality services in demanding environments.
* Personal Qualities: Flexible, empathetic, independent yet collaborative; strong planning and organizational skills; problem solving; positive attitude and excellent customer service.

Desirable

* Time management, literacy and numeracy; effective communication with patients, visitors, and colleagues; able to work under pressure.
