Regulatory Officer (Process Industry – Installations) - 32222
Location: Darlington or Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.
Full‑time, permanent.
Job Description
We are looking for a professional individual with science or engineering qualifications and/or relevant experience of working in process industry to regulate sites operating in a range of industrial sectors including Chemicals, Combustion, Waste Incineration, Food and Drink, Paper & Pulp, and Hazardous Waste treatment.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead site‑based audits at industrial sites, assessing data and information to produce accurate, timely written assessments of the operator’s ability to protect the environment, prevent pollution and optimise use of resources.
* Complete desk‑top assessments of monitoring data, operational procedures and management systems.
* Influence and negotiate with operators to secure best practice, often dealing with senior‑level staff and local stakeholder communities.
* Set conditions under which a site may continue to operate and enforce the law if they fail to comply.
* Respond to and investigate environmental incidents and regulatory breaches to ensure remedial and enforcement actions are implemented.
Qualifications & Experience
Mandatory: Relevant scientific/engineering qualifications (degree or equivalent) and/or experience of working in process industry or regulation; possibility of membership of a relevant professional body.
Desirable: Experience of environmental regulation and/or enforcement, incident management. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work in complex and fast‑changing situations.
