About the School

Rutherglen High School is an Additional Support Needs School. It was opened in August 1999 and is a non‑denominational and co‑educational school. It was originally located in Reid Street in Rutherglen and moved to a shared campus with Cathkin High School and Cathkin Community Nursery in October 2008. The school is a one‑storey building and its current accommodation consists of 8 classrooms and 7 specialist rooms including an ICT suite, drama room, music room, art room, technical education room, home economics room and science room. There are also two gym facilities (PE hall and multi‑gym), a sensory room, medical room, staffroom, management accommodation, assembly area and a hygiene room.

Within the school we have a House System and three House Groups. Rutherglen High School is a Rights Respecting School, a Health Promoting School and an Eco School. Fund‑raising for charity and the promotion of Fairtrade are an integral part of the school ethos. To date we have achieved level 1 of Rights Respecting School Award, Gold Award in Health Promoting Schools Award and have been awarded our 5th Green Flag.

Our Pupils

The school provides an appropriate secondary education to young people aged 11‑18 with a wide range of additional support needs including global learning needs, autistic spectrum disorder and severe and profound needs. Pupils are taught in smaller class settings (maximum 10) with allocated support staff. The current roll is 95.

Our Aims

The aim of our school is to provide opportunity for all pupils to achieve their potential academically, emotionally and socially. This is achieved by providing a wide range of subjects, courses and experiences, by creating an environment in which effective learning and teaching can take place, by promoting the development of co‑operative and responsible attitudes and to promote partnership with pupils, parents, staff and the wider community.

Our Parents

We aim to work in partnership with parents and the wider community. The Parent Council was established in 2007 and takes an active role in the life of the school.

Modernisation Programme

South Lanarkshire Council schools have undergone an £800m+ modernisation programme. The aim of this programme is simple – to create high quality additional support needs and primary and secondary provision in South Lanarkshire that is fit for the twenty‑first century.

Mission Statement

It is our mission to make positive meaningful changes in the lives of young people. We aim to provide an exceptional learning and working environment for pupils and staff and work in partnership with parents, support staff and other professionals.
