Overview
This is a Countywide Radiology Assistant Post. We have hours rotating between both the Alexandra Site and the Kidderminster site and hours based at the Worcester site.
This post will provide you with opportunity to support a wide range of disciplines within the Radiology department including MRI, CT, Ultrasound, ED, and also outpatient/inpatient imaging departments. For suitable candidates we actively encourage role extension with a career progression pathway through to Radiographer. This post involves inclusion in weekends, Bank Holidays and out of hours shifts. Enthusiasm, flexibility and the ability to work without direct supervision with a willingness to learn are essential.

Main duties / Responsibilities
To work as an integral part of the Radiology team, providing a high standard of patient centred care, meeting the needs of our patients, consultants and Radiology colleagues. You will need to have good communication skills, liaising with wider healthcare professionals and be focused to deliver the highest standards of patient care. Working across the various modalities within Radiology will require a flexible approach ensuring that you are putting patients first in the delivery of care.

Job Description & Responsibilities
Key Duties:
Communication
* Provide and receive routine information requiring discretion, sensitivity or persuasive skills: exchange factual information with patients and other healthcare professionals using persuasion, reassurance, discretion, sensitivity and empathy as required.
* Assess communication needs of patients, anticipate barriers and implement alternative methods of communication if required.
* Provide any required after care. Communicate delays in a timely manner. Communicate effectively with patients, carers, visitors and the multidisciplinary team.
* Occasionally receive and communicate sensitive information from/to patients. Respect privacy and dignity, providing a caring and confidential service. Promote the best available departmental environment.
Clinical
* Develop and maintain knowledge of Radiology exams/procedures and associated requirements (preparation, during the exam, aftercare) to ensure safe delivery of practice/service.
* Contribute to the smooth running of departments; undertake basic observation (e.g., Oxygen Saturations and Blood Pressure).
* Develop own competence to deliver care through improving clinical/technical knowledge and expertise.
* Liaise with other healthcare professionals (wards/porters) to arrange timely patient transportation.
* Assist in patient care (changing, undressing/dressing, aiding in/out of scan table/room).
* Manage enquiries from internal and external sources. Confidently use the Radiology Information System.
* Maintain flexibility to assist with other duties within role competencies.
* Assist with moving and handling of patients safely per Trust manual handling policy. Reassure anxious patients; attend to personal hygiene as needed. Understand role of chaperone. In MRI, support patients with anxiety about claustrophobia.
* Monitor stock, order equipment/accessories/consumables as required.
Education
* Promote a positive learning environment and participate in personal development reviews and mentorship.
* Support students and other Imaging Assistants through induction and guidance.
* Participate in personal development needs identified by service leads or appraisal process.
Administrative & Recording
* Register patients, update records, manage bookings, extract work lists, and RIS activities. Maintain accurate data entry and records of examinations. Understand contingencies when electronic systems fail.
Equipment & Infection Control
* Adhere to manual handling and operate basic radiology equipment following training; report faults to maintain service provision.
* Comply with Infection Prevention and Control policies; wear PPE when required; maintain cleanliness of equipment and rooms; manage waste and linens appropriately; conduct hand hygiene audits; safe handling of IV/Oral contrast.
Governance
* Report incidents via Trust risk management system and participate in investigations; stay up to date with department policies and training; maintain professional boundaries and safeguarding awareness.
Finance & Resources
* Adhere to efficient use of resources and maintain stock levels; order supplies as required.
Health & Safety
* Maintain knowledge of Health and Safety at Work Act; work safely in line with Trust policies (Health & Safety, Infection prevention, COSHH, Security and Radiation Protection). Read and sign local safety procedures (e.g., Radiation safety policy, IRMER). Ensure equipment is safe and report malfunctions. Recognise emergencies, initiate basic life support and call the crash team when necessary. Uphold safeguarding and participate in Quality Improvement initiatives.
Working Conditions
* Frequent use of VDU equipment; occasional exposure to distressing situations, body fluids, and potentially aggressive patients or relatives.
Other duties
* Adhere to Trust and Radiology policies; contribute to department aims; participate in workload planning and department procedures; develop professionally and maintain confidentiality.
Qualifications
Essential
* GCSE/O Level with grade C or above in Maths or English; good basic education
* Experience in a clinical hospital setting; experience working with people
* Use of Microsoft Office Systems
Desirable
* NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care
* Experience within an Imaging Department
