An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled Lead Mechanical Engineer to join a specialist engineering workshop supporting the assembly, overhaul, repair, and testing of high-precision mechanical systems used within the aerospace sector.
This position is ideal for an experienced mechanical professional who enjoys hands-on engineering work, problem-solving, and working with complex mechanical assemblies including gearboxes, hydraulic systems, and safety-critical components.
The Role
Working within a quality-driven workshop environment, you will be responsible for the disassembly, inspection, repair, overhaul, assembly, and testing of precision mechanical assemblies to strict engineering and regulatory standards.
You will also play a key role in troubleshooting legacy components, improving repair processes, and supporting workshop operations to ensure the highest standards of workmanship and compliance are maintained.
Key Responsibilities
* Disassemble and inspect mechanical assemblies to assess wear, damage, and serviceability
* Carry out precision repairs, overhaul activities, and reassembly work to tight tolerances
* Interpret and follow technical drawings, maintenance manuals, and engineering documentation
* Assemble integrated mechanical systems ensuring correct alignment, fit, and function
* Conduct functional testing of hydraulic and pneumatic assemblies where applicable
* Record repair activity, test results, and workshop documentation accurately
* Support fault finding and root cause investigations on complex mechanical systems
* Ensure tools, equipment, and processes comply with quality and calibration standards
* Maintain high standards of safety, housekeeping, and regulatory compliance
* Restore assemblies and components to an overhauled operational and cosmetic standard
Requirements
* Proven experience in mechanical assembly, repair, overhaul, or precision engineering
* Strong understanding of mechanical principles, tolerances, and assembly techniques
* Experience working with gearboxes and mechanical drive systems
* Knowledge of small hydraulic systems and basic fault diagnosis
* Ability to read and interpret technical engineering documentation
* Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship
* Comfortable working independently and within a close-knit engineering team
Desirable Experience
* Aerospace, aviation, automotive, marine, defence, or other regulated engineering environments
* Experience working with safety-critical components or assemblies
* Familiarity with workshop quality systems, audits, and calibration control
* ERP/MRP system experience and confidence using reporting tools such as Excel
* Understanding of 5S or lean workshop practices
