Job Summary
The Head of Nursing provides strategic and operational leadership for the nursing workforce across the GP federation. This role is responsible for the effective management of nursing staff, including recruitment, appraisal, continuing professional development (CPD), and performance management. The postholder leads on the development and implementation of clinical policies and service improvements, ensuring high-quality, person-centred care. They are clinically accountable for the delivery of nursing services, working collaboratively with internal teams and external agencies to ensure integrated, safe, and effective care pathways. The role also carries responsibility for the management of budgets and physical resources related to nursing services, ensuring efficient and sustainable use of assets.
Responsibilities
* Provide strategic and operational leadership to the nursing workforce across the federation.
* Lead on recruitment, induction, appraisal, and performance management of nursing staff.
* Foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous professional development (CPD).
* Ensure effective workforce planning and succession planning.
* Ensure compliance with clinical governance frameworks, policies, and procedures.
* Maintain clinical accountability for the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality nursing services.
* Liaise with internal and external agencies to ensure integrated care pathways and service continuity.
* Lead on the development and implementation of clinical policies and protocols.
* Develop and implement nursing strategies aligned with organisational goals and national healthcare priorities.
* Contribute to business planning and service transformation initiatives.
* Monitor and evaluate service performance, identifying areas for improvement and innovation.
* Liaise with leadership team regarding the nursing budget, ensuring effective use of financial and physical resources.
* Support procurement and maintenance of clinical equipment and supplies.
* Ensure compliance with financial governance and reporting requirements.
Person Specification
Education and Qualification
* Essential: Registered Nurse with a valid NMC registration.
* Essential: Master's degree.
* Desirable: Leadership qualification.
* Desirable: Non-medical prescribing qualification.
Experience
* Essential: Extensive experience in a senior nursing role, preferably in primary or community care.
* Essential: Proven leadership and management experience.
* Essential: Experience in strategic planning and service development.
* Desirable: Experience working across organisational boundaries.
* Desirable: Experience in budget management.
Knowledge
* Essential: In-depth understanding of clinical governance and healthcare regulations.
* Essential: Knowledge of current best practices in nursing and patient care.

* Desirable: Familiarity with national policy drivers in primary care.
* Desirable: Knowledge of quality improvement methodologies.
