Access to Higher Education Diploma (Primary Teaching)

The Access to Higher Education Diploma Primary Teaching is a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification, validated by Gateway Qualifications and regulated by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA). It’s designed to prepare adults for university-level study and a rewarding career in education. You’ll also develop essential academic and professional skills to prepare you for university study from research and report writing to reflective practice and presentation skills.

Learning takes place through a mix of classroom sessions, independent study, group projects and practical tasks. You’ll complete a range of assignments including essays, reports, lesson plans, and presentations designed to build your confidence and competence as a future educator.

GCSE English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent Level 2 qualifications)

GCSE Science at Grade C/4 or above is desirable for university progression

If you do not already hold a Science GCSE, Burnley College offers an Adult GCSE Biology class that can be studied alongside your Access course to meet progression requirements.

Basic IT skills are also required, as you’ll complete research, written assignments and online learning tasks throughout the course.

Applicants must be aged 19 or over and demonstrate a strong commitment to progressing into a career in education.

Assessment

Assessment is continuous throughout the course and may include:

* Written assignments, essays and reports
* Presentations and microteaching activities
* Lesson planning and reflective journals
* Research projects and case studies

Information About Fees

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost of your tuition fees.

You don’t start repaying the loan until you earn over £27,295 per year (current threshold).

If you progress to university and successfully complete your degree, your Advanced Learner Loan for this Access course is written off in full.

This means you could study completely free, depending on your progression.
