Senior Clinical Fellow in General Paediatrics and Neonatology (ST3+)

Senior Clinical Fellow in General Paediatrics and Neonatology

We are seeking a senior clinical fellow at middle grade level to cover general paediatrics and neonatology in our busy secondary care service for a period of 12 months. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to join a CESR programme, working at St George's Hospital in London in their PICU and tertiary NICU, as well as in a community placement in the local area. Support will be provided by a team of Consultants experienced in CESR, with regular appraisals.

This position is to fill rota gaps. Rota arrangements include separate schedules for general and neonatal paediatrics at Consultant, Middle grade, and SHO levels. There is a Consultant of the week for Outwood ward, NNU, and CAU. On Outwood ward, duties include a long day registrar, long day SHO, and short day SHO. CAU coverage includes a short day registrar and SHO, with additional registrars and SHOs on duty from 1-10pm. NNU staffing includes a long day SHO and registrar. The postnatal ward is staffed by two short day SHOs and a registrar. The CAU has a Consultant on-site until 10pm, including weekends. Overnight shifts are covered by two registrars and one SHO per side (general and neonatal).

Main duties of the job

The role is for a senior clinical fellow at ST4+ level, covering general paediatrics and neonatology in our busy secondary care service for a 12-month fixed term. The post involves working an 18-person, full-shift rota, which includes short days, long days, evening shifts from 1-10pm, and night shifts.

There are four clinical areas: the paediatric inpatient unit (Outwood ward), the Child Assessment Unit (CAU), the neonatal unit (NNU), and the postnatal ward (Burstow ward). Separate rotas exist for general and neonatal paediatrics at all levels. You will rotate across all areas, independently holding Registrar-led outpatient clinics under supervision. You will work approximately one in three weekends and do one set of night shifts every six weeks. All clinical areas are well-supported by consultants, with cross-team collaboration expected.

We offer an extensive teaching schedule, including consultant-led morning teaching, weekly X-ray meetings, simulation training, monthly Safeguarding peer reviews, and monthly Perinatal mortality and morbidity meetings. Opportunities also exist for audit, quality improvement projects, presenting at departmental teaching, hospital Grand Rounds, and teaching medical students.

An Educational Supervisor will be allocated to mentor and guide you during this post.
