About GDS
The Government Digital Service (GDS) is the digital centre of government, responsible for setting, leading and delivering the vision for a modern digital government.
Position
We are hiring three User Researchers: two for GOV.UK and one for GOV.UK Chat.
Key Responsibilities
* Plan and conduct a wide range of user research projects aligned with team vision.
* Deliver high‑quality, end‑to‑end research from planning, design, participant recruitment, analysis to actionable reports.
* Design and execute research that drives the development and continuous improvement of government products/services.
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders, working closely with product managers, designers and developers to translate insights into impactful features.
* Advocate for users, maintaining focus on their needs while balancing wider business goals.
* Communicate research insights clearly, fostering shared understanding among teams.
* Continuously reflect and experiment with innovative research methods.
* Manage time effectively to deliver high‑quality research on schedule and support the research community.
Qualifications
* Experience with established user research methods (planning, analysis, findings sharing), generating inclusive, human‑centred design insights.
* Ability to present clear insights in compelling ways.
* Collaborative experience with multidisciplinary teams, engaging colleagues in research activities.
* Inclusive practice: ability to include diverse users in research.
* Understanding of social and technological contexts influencing user behaviour; knowledge in user‑centred design, accessibility, and inclusion practices.
* Initiative and proactive mindset for creative solutions, independent or in support of complex projects, with continuous reflection.
* Experience in AI Chat Bot research desirable for GOV.UK Chat.
