Financial Controller

Chelmsford, Essex – office based

£75,000 to 80,000 per annum

Having been established for over 30 years, this well-known local business is looking for a Financial Controller to help take them into their next phase of development.

The primary function will be to oversee all accounting functions in the Group. You will be responsible for the collection, analysis and consolidation of data to assist the CFO in the effective management of the Group’s finances.

This will include co-ordinating and preparing the monthly accounts, cashflows, annual budgets along with ad hoc updates and all other financial reports, ensuring accuracy and compliance.

High levels of enthusiasm and a strong team focus are essential to the success of the role. Clear, effective, and professional communication throughout the business is key to ensure the business operates within the culture that is demanded.

The role is office based at the companies busy Chelmsford site (you will ideally be a driver due to out of city centre location).

Key Responsibilities

* Manage all day-to-day accounting operations (sales ledger, purchase ledger, general ledger, and banking facilities)
* Oversee payroll, pension contributions, and employee benefits
* Support procurement and purchasing teams with process compliance and cost reviews
* Manage cashflow, optimising accounts receivable and payable processes
* Prepare monthly management accounts, cashflows, budgets, and financial reports for CFO review
* Provide detailed financial analysis and reconciliations
* Liaise with auditors and ensure all financial records are accurate and audit-ready
* Oversee VAT returns and other regulatory reporting
* Attend weekly operational meetings with financial input
* Mentor and supervise finance team members
* Monitor and improve financial controls and processes
* Support ad-hoc projects for the CFO

What We’re Looking For

* At least 5 years’ experience in a senior financial role
* Strong grasp of accounting standards and audit processes
* ERP system experience
* Excellent numeracy, analytical, and problem-solving skills
* Advanced Excel and solid Microsoft Office knowledge
* Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
* Ability to work under pressure with a diplomatic yet firm approach
* A collaborative team player who can also work independently
* Driver preferred (due to office location)
