We are seeking a versatile and creative 3D Generalist to join our visual storytelling team at fern and Simplicissimus. In this role, you will create high-quality 3D visuals that enhance our explainers, essays, and documentary-style videos with depth, style, and narrative clarity.
As a 3D Generalist, your responsibilities include building environments, animating characters, and translating complex ideas into immersive visual experiences. You will collaborate with producers, editors, and motion designers to push the boundaries of journalistic video production.
This is a fully remote, freelance position with frequent work opportunities.
Tasks
1. 3D Animation & Worldbuilding
2. Create cinematic 3D animations to support editorial storytelling
3. Model, texture, and light 3D environments, props, and characters
4. Animate characters, camera movements, and dynamic sequences
5. Design and implement lighting for stylized and realistic scenes
6. Composite 3D elements into final video edits, ensuring visual cohesion
7. Maintain visual consistency and meet production deadlines
8. Creative Collaboration
9. Translate scripts and briefs into visual scenes
10. Work with motion designers, editors, and creative leads on integrating 3D assets
11. Contribute to developing a unified visual language
12. Participate in brainstorming and concept development sessions
Requirements
* Proficiency in Blender; Unreal Engine 5 is a plus
* Strong eye for design, lighting, and storytelling
* 3+ years of professional experience in 3D production, especially in explainers, essays, or documentaries
* Knowledge of modeling, texturing, rigging, lighting, animation, and compositing workflows
* Independent, reliable, and collaborative work style
* Passion for visual content and editorial storytelling
* Intermediate German language skills
