The Opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Senior Structural/Bridge Engineer to join our Consulting Structures Team. This is a hybrid role with shared office space in our Birmingham office and we invite applications from across the region.
Amey Consulting has been appointed as the design partner for two regions of National Highways\' 6-year Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF), the largest and most comprehensive renewals programme ever launched by the government-owned company. The Midlands Region SDF includes over 2,000 large bridges and culverts.
Since 2020 we’ve been managing three major structures under a long-term contract, delivering engineering projects and opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional design staff at all career stages.
The Role
Our Structural Engineers play an important part within the Highways and Designated Funds Design team and alongside our client, National Highways. As a Lead Senior Structural/Bridge Engineer, you will provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of highways drainage schemes, while taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior designers. Responsibilities include:
* Lead a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements
* Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of scheme deliverables that satisfy quality, cost and programme criteria
* Oversee the actions of junior staff undertaking similar tasks and take responsibility for their actions
* Be responsible for the commercial success of projects within your portfolio, controlling budgets and managing costs
* Liaise with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attend progress meetings and respond to queries
* Contribute to bid preparation and the work winning function
* Drive effective health and safety practices within the team
What you will bring to us
* Developed experience and expertise within the relevant technical field, likely gained in a Senior Engineer role or equivalent
* Ability to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising junior staff
* Experience in project-related tasks for health, safety and welfare (e.g., Amey’s Integrated Management System and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations)
* Capable of acting as day-to-day main engineering contact for a project where required (e.g., CRE for Network Rail schemes)
* Knowledge and experience of design and specification processes with the ability to advise others (Design Team Leader for appropriate projects). Able to check designs to a high standard
* Highly experienced with relevant software and analytical tools; strong ability to check work produced by others
* Strong understanding of CDM and risk assessment; substantial experience in hazard and risk management and mitigation
* Capable of acting as Principal Designer for appropriate projects
* Supervisory and people-management skills; able to manage a medium-sized, locally based single-discipline technical team
* Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence is desirable and may be essential on particular contracts
